Judge Merchan said that $1k fines are not working and the court will have to consider a jail sanction going forward. He said it was truly a last resort and he has done everything he can do to avoid imposing a jail sentence. But at the end of the day he has a job to do: to protect the dignity of the judicial system and compel respect for the law. He described Trump’s gag order violations as a “direct attack on the rule of law” and said he “cannot allow that to continue.” Amen.
