I think that the manual one that is nonlinear respects the fact that smaller font sizes have a narrower range from which they can be viewed, relative to larger sizes that have a wider range of distances from which they can be viewed.

@calderon_type @behdadesfahbod @jeremytribby I typically observe the range of weight required to remain the same appearance over a given size range, so the user gets a wght400, e.g., appears the same at all sizes. Then, I do the same for the wght extremes, over the same size range. I.E. an old tradition.
