I have an intern, she’s 19, Muslim, keeps to herself mostly, only talks to two other interns, one girl, 22, from covenant uni and a guy 21 from Babcock. This morning, she text she wanted to see me, got to the office, she was literally waiting by the door.

Now, for context, this girl is studying theatre arts at Unilag, so I have no idea where the obsession with architecture came from.

She wanted to show me her rebuild of the national museum in Lagos in 3D. Smart enough to leave her dimensions in meters but set parameters at 2:1 because she did interior decor too down to tiny details like latches and pivot types.

She chews through CADs like Rerender, Auto etc.

I’ve sent for drawing papers, I’m going to indulge her later in the day by replicating those designs with equal dimensions on paper, showing plan, front and side views, to help her see how those make up the 3 dimensions, as UniUyo never gave us any softwares to play with. We did engineering drawing inside the studio with just paper, math sets and French curves.

So no lunch breaks today. Or we eat while doing it. 😅

And why this? Is there any data that supports that people that are excellent in academics contribute more to the society than people who are not as excellent? However, people from advantaged homes excel better in their academics than people of disadvantaged backgrounds.

I think every student who graduates with a First Class from any Nigerian university should have 100% of their school fees refunded, plus a ₦1 million excellence bonus.

I came across a similar incentive model in the Netherlands, and it made me think.

Imagine the message it would send: Hard work pays. Excellence is rewarded.

Instead of only celebrating academic success with certificates, why not attach real value to it?

It could fundamentally change how many students approach their education.
