Before Bikini Bottom, Hillenburg was a marine biology teacher who also loved animation. Somehow, those two passions became SpongeBob SquarePants, a show filled with absurd humor, unforgettable characters and a strange amount of heart beneath all the chaos.

He gave us SpongeBob, Patrick, Squidward, Mr. Krabs, Sandy and an entire underwater world that still feels instantly familiar decades later.

Hillenburg stepped away after The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie before later returning to the series, remaining deeply connected to the character he created until his passing in 2018 at just 57.

For many longtime fans, SpongeBob never felt quite the same after Stephen was gone. Not because the laughter disappeared, but because the imagination behind Bikini Bottom could never truly be replaced.

Rest in peace, Stephen Hillenburg. Bikini Bottom will always carry a piece of you. 💛
