Curiosity often sparks scientific breakthroughs. For 2026 medicine laureate Peter Hegemann, it began with a question: how could a tiny green alga called Chlamydomonas react so rapidly to light?
The Chlamydomonas algae is famous for its ability to swim towards light. When the alga is stirred into a petri dish, the liquid turns a faint green colour. If one side of the dish is illuminated, the green colour moves towards the light source, as the microscopic algae swim towards it. The algae sense the light with an eyespot, a dot on the cell’s surface that contains a light-capturing molecule, retinal.
Hegemann discovered electrical signals in the light-sensitive eyespot that occurred just half a millisecond after illumination, far faster than the response of the human eye. He could only think of one explanation for this ultrafast response: the process must be much simpler than in a human eye. He proposed that a single protein could both detect light and act as an ion channel, an idea initially met with scepticism.
After years of experiments with his colleague Georg Nagel, Hegemann's hypothesis proved to be correct. Together, they discovered proteins that functioned exactly as he had predicted: ion channels that opened in response to light. This breakthrough laid the foundation for optogenetics, a revolutionary technique that allows scientists to control individual nerve cells with light. What began as a question about a microscopic alga ultimately helped transform the field of neuroscience.

REVÉS JUDICIAL A PATENTE REVIVIDA

MAGIC brings together clinicians, AI researchers, policymakers, industry stakeholders and local experts to address a critical question: does strong benchmark performance translate into safe, useful support across diverse healthcare settings?
Our initial priorities are:
✅ A global health LLM evaluation benchmark addressing multilingual coverage, regional disease burden and sociocultural adaptability.
✅ A global deployment reporting standard clarifying intended use, target users, healthcare settings, and performance and safety across populations.
Thank you to our colleagues #worldwide for helping launch the network. 𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗴𝗼𝗮𝗹 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗺𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗔𝗜 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀, 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘄𝗵𝗼𝗺, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀.

Some molecules, such as amino acids, exist as two variants that are each other’s mirror image. However, living organisms only contain one of these mirror images. How chemical asymmetry such as this could have emerged was long a mystery to chemists. Henri B. Kagan and Kenso Soai have been awarded the #NobelPrize in Chemistry 2026 for discovering a solution to this puzzle.
* La deuda con farmacéuticas (unos 14 mil mdp, concentrada en IMSS-Bienestar) puede chocar con Birmex, que no quiere cargar pasivos ajenos.
* Y hoy abre @Expo_FAC 2026 en CDMX.

Early detection is key when it comes to diagnosing breast cancer. That’s why breast self-exams are so important. Additionally, your healthcare provider may perform or order the following cancer screening tests:
Physical examination
Mammogram
Breast ultrasound
Breast magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan
Breast biopsy
Immunohistochemistry (IHC)
Genetic tests
Mammography is a specially designed X-ray technique that provides high-definition views of the breast tissue in order to screen for breast cancer. A low dose of radiation is used to create an image of your breast.
A breast ultrasound takes pictures of the inside of your breast using sound waves. This can be helpful if your healthcare provider wants to see an area of your breast more closely. But it is NOT a replacement for a mammogram.
Mammograms are the gold standard when it comes to screening for breast cancer. In fact, mammography is 85% to 90% accurate. Mammograms can identify any asymmetries, lumps or changes to your breast. Some of the earliest signs of breast cancer, such as calcifications, are only visible on mammography.
A breast ultrasound can be helpful if you have dense breasts or if a suspicious lump is found during your mammogram. It can show whether a breast lump is a solid mass or a benign fluid-filled cyst.
If you’re pregnant, a breast ultrasound is often the first choice for a focal breast symptom. And it's usually painless.
A screening mammogram will likely be your starting point.

An oral lavender oil preparation produced broad antidepressant effects in patients with mild-to-moderate major depressive disorder (MDD), with a symptom profile similar to that of the SSRI sertraline.
Results of a randomized controlled trial involving nearly 500 patients showed that the preparation, known as Silexan, was significantly more effective than placebo after 8 weeks for five of nine symptoms assessed with the Montgomery-Åsberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS), including apparent and reported sadness, reduced appetite, concentration difficulties, and lassitude.
The findings point to an “independent, direct antidepressant effect,” the investigators led by Hans-Jürgen Möller, MD, Ludwig Maximillian University, Munich, Germany, noted. https://t.co/PWKaos6NoC
