Kristen McQuillan argues that "differentiation"โgiving struggling students easier textsโbackfires, trapping them in permanently lower-level work instead of catching them up. She recommends "teaching to the top": give all students the same challenging material, but add temporary supports like vocabulary help or read-alouds. Unlike differentiation, these scaffolds should fade away as students improve. https://t.co/tPQbgrjOiF

When a student is still confused after your first explanation, repeating the same words more slowly isn't always going to help.
Ask them to show you where they got stuck. Maybe they missed a vocabulary word, need to see one step modeled, or are approaching the problem in a way you hadn't considered.
That information tells you what to teach next.
Sometimes a different example is all it takes. Other times, the student needs more practice, a smaller entry point, or another opportunity to work through the concept.
The goal doesn't have to change just because the first approach didn't work.
