Even in Australia, where one would think only 28m people are inhabiting a whole continent, the havoc wreaked is very evident.
As of early 2026, there are 434 animal, plant, and ecosystem species listed nationally as Critically Endangered under Australia's Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act).
This represents roughly 20% of the total 2,316 native plants, animals, and ecosystems recognised as nationally threatened.
