We are not all right.

Like many, I remain absolutely gutted by Hamas’ horrific acts last weekend. 

This week has been surreal in the worst ways. Jewish people have not been the recipients of this level of overt hate and wanton acts of terror since the holocaust. New parents have had to teach their children what "antisemitism" means, and why over a thousand Jews were killed just for being Jewish.

I am a proud Jew. And, right now, I am a very angry Jew. Yes, my anger lies with Hamas. But my anger lies here in my home. I'm infuriated that CBC, our federally funded media outlet, sent a memo to not define Hamas as "terrorists". I am disgusted that Toronto's (home of the 3rd most Jews in North America) mayor Olivia Chow allowed a celebration of Palestinian freedom at our city hall while so many of us mourn in utter devastation (and that she remains silent). I am dejected that leaders at once noble educational institutions like Harvard University qualify last week's terror as just retaliation for Israel's political actions. I am horrified that so many Jewish parents (in my city!) feel forced to keep their kids home from school today in order to prevent them from harm.

For my many non-Jewish friends, your personal messages sharing empathy and compassion are appreciated -- but it's not enough. We need you now more than ever. We need more speeches like New York's Mayor Eric Adams. We need to know that we're not alone and that we're in this together. We need you not only to publicly condemn the terror of last weekend but to stand up against the rampant anti-semitism on display throughout the world right now. Please tell your leaders and institutions that "Our fight, is your fight" and that we all stand together in our fight against hatred. We stand with Israel, and we stand with the Jewish people 🇮🇱🇮🇱🇮🇱🇮🇱

I’m Jewish. But for all my life I’ve first and foremost identified as an American. A damn proud one. I majored in American history. I went to law school and understand our constitutional framework and legal system. I love this country, its history, its accomplishments. Everything it stands for and strives to be.

These last few days are the first that I’ve felt my identity shift. Not by my choice. From an American-Jew, to a Jewish-American. And the worst part about this shift is that it comes from the pressure and rhetoric of those who are clueless as to what this country is all about. Who in many cases detest it.

As I write this evening, I “feel” more Jewish knowing that others across the U.S. despise me for that. Can justify the idea of carrying out violence against me for that. Killing. Burning. Torturing. It doesn’t seem to matter if the cause is “noble.”

It’s alarming. I knew Holocaust survivors growing up who were proud Germans at one time. Their identity as Jews - as an “other” - was cast upon them forcibly. I’m not equating this week’s disgusting support for what Hamas did to the lead up to the Holocaust, but I can better appreciate the slippery slope of dehumanization. Of justifying or accepting violence against others based on simply who they are.

I am in complete shock that rallies celebrating Hamas’ terrorist attack and calling for essentially the extermination of Jews are happening across America. “From the river to the sea” is not a peaceful slogan. Particularly not in the wake of a mass murder event of Jews.
On our campuses. In our cities. On social media. Again, complete shock.

I have been extremely critical on here and in my writing of the far left. For what I view as its adoption and promotion of dangerous ideologies - sadly, gaining in popularity - which frame everything from the stance of oppressed vs oppressor, and are motivated by grievance and victimhood. I’ve been critical because I know from history and philosophy that such ideologies lack nuance and often lead to violent and destructive outcomes. But to see the first footsteps of that here in America is still unbelievable.

The fact that the same crowd that preaches concepts like inclusivity and diversity - that says “words are violence” and “silence is violence” - the fact that crowd overlaps with those endorsing Hamas’ actions or those refusing to acknowledge the brutality of such actions without any caveat - well, that fact is not lost of me…

In any event, this is not what America is about. It cannot become what America is about. We cannot accept this, because we know where it leads. If our political and educational systems are incapable of reform - of eradicating the seeds of hate and violence - then the private sector and concerned citizens must step up. There are clear moral boundaries in this world. Hate or the justification of violence against anyone simply for who they are or where they come from is a clear one.
