really boring tried argument. Football is more than government’s co-optation of it. Every single government will try to claim football victories, Egypt isn’t an outlier. God forbid a population living under 30$ a month tries and finds joy in the nation’s beloved sport. Plus we’re a country with a history of attempts by fans to reclaim football for the fans to the extent that they were killed and jailed for it. To try and frame football in the country as a something that the state only owns is absurd to me.

Anyone who argues that immigrants weren't discussed in debates leading to the passage of the 14th Amendment doesn't know anything about it. At the time, the panic was about Chinese immigrants, and much of the rhetoric you hear about Latinos today originated in the 1800s and was about Chinese people. Blaming everything from the rise in housing costs to depressing wages, both outright lies, were and are applied in the same manner, then and now.

The only thing that changes is the targets of the lies.

Here's an example; there are many:

Senator Edgar Owen said, "I find no fault with the Chinese... but is the child of the Chinese immigrant in California a citizen? Is the child of a Gypsy born in Pennsylvania a citizen? ... Is it proposed that the people of California are to remain quiescent while they are overrun by a flood of immigration of the Mongol race?"

California Senator John Conness responded, saying, “The proposition before us ... relates simply in that respect to the children begotten of Chinese parents in California, and it is proposed to declare that they shall be citizens ... I am in favor of doing so...”

The 14th Amendment was explicitly meant to include immigrants.
