3 jogos importantes ontem:
BARRADÃO: gramado horrível, prende, bola não rola
MARACANÃ: Até o Samuel Lino detonou a condição do gramado
Detalhe:
O VAR poderia intervir nesse lance.
Poland once helped liberate the Netherlands, and we thanked them by spending decades mispronouncing their commander's name.
During the Second World War, thousands of Polish soldiers fought their way across Western Europe after their own country had been occupied by both Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union.
Among them was the Polish 1st Armoured Division under General Stanisław Maczek.
In 1944 they entered the Netherlands.
Their most famous Dutch chapter came at Breda. Maczek wanted to liberate the city while avoiding unnecessary destruction and civilian casualties, so his troops manoeuvred around German positions rather than simply flattening their way through them.
On 29 October, Breda was liberated.
The city survived remarkably intact.
The people of Breda responded with Polish flags and signs reading:
“Dziękujemy Wam Polacy.”
“Thank you, Poles.”
There is something bittersweet about what followed. The Dutch could celebrate their liberation, but many of the Polish soldiers couldn't simply go home. Poland had fallen under Soviet domination, and men who had fought from Poland through France, Belgium and the Netherlands suddenly found that the country they had been fighting for was no longer a place to which all of them could safely return.
Maczek eventually settled in Scotland.
But his connection to the Netherlands never disappeared. When he died in 1994 at the age of 102, he was buried, according to his wishes, among his soldiers at the Polish military cemetery in Breda.
Even today, Breda remembers its Polish liberators.
For Dutch people, Poland can sometimes feel like that large country somewhere beyond Germany whose language appears to have been deliberately designed without enough vowels.
But buried in Dutch soil are men who travelled an extraordinary distance to help give us our country back.
Some neighbours are closer than the map suggests.
Arbitragem tenebrosa no Nubank Parque e Palmeiras prejudicado.
How bad was life before modern science, technology, and economic growth? Awful.
The example I will use in class this Wednesday is Henry Clay (1777-1852). He was one of the most powerful men of his time in the U.S., not just among the elite but among the elite of the elite: Speaker of the House, Secretary of State, Senator, and three-time presidential candidate. He was also rich and a large slaveholder. The U.S. was among the richest countries in the world (perhaps only behind Great Britain) and among the most technologically advanced. And we are not talking about the early Middle Ages, but about the first half of the 19th century.
Given the constraints of his time, he had nearly everything within reach.
Clay and his wife, Lucretia (both in the photograph), had eleven children: six daughters and five sons. He buried all six daughters. By 1835, all were dead: two as infants, two as children, two as young mothers. He also buried a son in a war his father had opposed. Another son, Theodore, fractured his skull as a child, but since nobody could treat him, he spent decades in an asylum in Lexington.
Think about this for a second: seven children dead and one handicapped out of eleven, in the first half of the 19th century, among the elite of the elite, in one of the richest and most advanced places on the planet.
And I was angry yesterday because my cell phone coverage in Toddington (England) was poor.
@l_jankowski Publiczne wydatki emerytalno-rentowe w Danii nieco ponad 8%pkb. Polska w 2025 - 12.6%pkb. Wiek emerytalny Dania 67/67 i rośnie do 70/70, Polska 60/65 i są plany dalszego obniżania poprzez emerytury stażowe.
