For more than three decades, I have served as a firefighter and an Intermediate Paramedic. During that time, I have seen people on the very best and very worst days of their lives. I have run into burning buildings while others were running out. I have pulled victims from twisted wreckage, performed CPR on strangers, and stood with families as their worlds fell apart. And I can say this with absolute honesty, never once did I stop to ask someone in need what their political beliefs were.

When I carried an elderly woman escaping her house from a fire, I didn’t wonder how she voted. When a terrified mother held her injured child, I didn’t ask where she stood ideologically. When a woman collapsed in my arms after losing her daughter in a car accident, her party affiliation meant nothing to me. I never checked voter registration while applying a tourniquet. I never paused CPR to see what side someone was on. I never withheld oxygen because I disagreed with a belief. In those moments, labels vanished. All that mattered was that someone needed help.

Because at the end of the day, we are all God’s children. Pain does not pick sides. Flames do not discriminate. Blood loss does not care who you voted for. A stopped heart does not wait for political agreement. When lives are on the line, politics becomes irrelevant. What matters is compassion. What matters is humanity. What matters is doing what is right.

If that belief disqualifies me in today’s world, then I will wear that disqualification with pride. I never have forgotten what my job meant, and I never will. 🙏🪽
