You let the Pokémon Company define for you what is solely comp.

Other people let the community define what is comp.

Smogon 6v6 is infinitely more accessible (both because it's on a browser and singles is how the mainline games work).

VGC has more barriers to entry. It's the "official" format, but its playerbase is understandably smaller.
