Her baby’s father was murdered.

She was pregnant at the time.

There was overwhelming evidence.

CCTV footage.

Took 7 months to charge & arrest him.

She was told “if you don’t feel safe, go on vacation”

When he was finally arrested, he was immediately out on bail.

The same person that killed him, in ‘06/07, he was going to bomb a night club.

He was caught on a wire tap, saying he didn’t care how many people he took out.

We was sentenced to 8 years. Got out in 4.

He was then charged with 1st degree murder.

Acquitted because witness didn’t want to testify.

Three years AFTER he murdered her baby’s father, and being out on bail, he was finally sentenced to 15 years in jail.

And now, after only 4 years, he’s able to apply for day parole.

She’s going to leave Canada.

OUR GOVERNMENT HAS FAILED HER.

And countless other Canadians.

THIS IS UNFORGIVABLE.

Last week I was asking a journalist (who works for a major Canadian media outlet) about this.

This journalist agreed that Media in Canada had largely quit covering any opposing viewpoints to the government.

This journalist speculated that it happed during Covid. They had become stenographers for the government, believing that they had a moral duty to get the “government’s” information out…..and they never quit.

Maybe that’s true. Maybe it’s as simple as that (as horrifying as that is)….but I suspect it’s even worse. There are vested interests that don’t want the Liberals to ever lose power.

In an free and democratic society the media has a responsibility to question the government and hold them accountable.

Canadians deserve no less.

It is deeply troubling to watch elected officials advocate for silencing citizens who participated in a lawful democratic process simply because they disagree with the issue being raised.

This is not even about debating the pros and cons of independence. This is about an organized effort by elected officials to silence citizens from participating in a lawful democratic process, and that should concern everyone.

You do not have to support independence to recognize how dangerous that is. Once governments, political actors, and courts begin deciding which citizen-led issues are acceptable to discuss, democratic participation stops being a right and becomes a permission granted by those in power.

Today it is this petition. Tomorrow it could be any issue the political class finds inconvenient.

Citizens do not hold institutional power. Their voice is their power. And when lawful democratic processes are undermined to prevent citizens from even being heard, public trust in democracy itself begins to collapse.
