Kehlani’s discography is actually a perfect representation of “people don’t care until the numbers/success makes them care”.
Seeing everybody all of a sudden have an interest or call her music good, after the success of Folded, has annoyed a lot of long time fans. Me included🤷🏾♂️
This isn’t the early 2000s anymore, and a lot of this discourse refuses to accept that reality. Back then, artists could survive and even thrive mainly off music because physical sales, radio spins, and touring actually paid real money. That model is gone. We’re in a streaming era where music often earns the least once revenue is split between labels, distributors, publishers, managers, and taxes. Even artists with millions of listeners can still make modest income from music alone unless they own their masters, publishing, and distribution outright, and even then streaming payouts remain low. That’s why music today often functions as promotion rather than the main paycheck. The real money comes from what that visibility unlocks, like brand deals, endorsements, campaigns, commercials, liquor partnerships, fashion, and licensing. Laughing at artists for selling tequila, donuts, or chicken just reveals a misunderstanding of how the modern industry actually works. The industry changed, the money moved, and artists who understand that evolve while others stay stuck arguing with a business model that no longer exists.
Best i.e. @ChloeBailey sat down with @terrellgrice in 2023 and revealed some of the real reasons that artists don’t always make a lot of money from music.
The brand value and engagement experienced by Vogue because of a Black British woman writer hired as a freelancer and not a staffer is yet another example of how Black creatives are worth more than these media institutions pay them.

Video gave them a face
Internet killed the video star
The internet took it all and gave it to everyone.
AI killed the internet star.
Now ai is taking it from everyone
Sasha Ellese is going out sad, fuelling religion wars on the internet & creating tension with the father of your child, now claiming that a man will be a martyr, who verbatim said black people were better as slaves whilst raising a black child. It’s actually so confusing

Really crazy that hip-hop used to be so aligned with activism and social justice, and now we have media figures in the space too afraid to even acknowledge crimes against humanity. Pathetic.
not even trying to be funny but no one can say that FLO didn’t have a (big) impact on bringing girl groups back because the amount of groups that have suddenly debuted within the past 3 years alone is insane 😭 there’s a new one every week now
