Imo State may quietly be running one of Nigeria’s most proactive electricity initiative following the 2023 Electricity act.

The project is known as
Orashi Electricity Project (Light Up Imo).

The Company was licensed in 2024 to operate as an integrated electricity provider enabled by the Electricity Act 2023, which allows states to participate directly in power generation, transmission and distribution.

So far, what has been publicly commissioned includes a 15 MVA, 33/11kV injection substation in New Owerri, a 15km 33kV transmission line from Egbu to New Owerri, and roughly 45km of distribution infrastructure serving residential, commercial and industrial clusters around the Owerri axis.

The long-term ambition is expansion across all 27 LGAs of Imo State, with discussions around broader generation capacity, including the potential use of gas and other energy resources.

What’s confirmed so far?

✅ Improved supply reported in connected areas
