a lot of people’s sense of self now is built on a foundation of envy, which is the decay from suppressing your desires. so many look to justify this avoidance of self by ascribing morality to their failures; then the misery compounds bc its rewarded with company on social media
Whimsicality in adults also almost always comes with a rather closed-off attitude towards life. There is a rigid self-referential circuit & lot of prejudice. A small enclosure that shields life. Lack curiosity. Beneath all the talk of re-enchantment, romance, a stench of corpse.
Play is solemnity, not silliness. Adults who try to “recapture their childhood” often do so by trying to capture the whimsy of childhood. But play is serious for children, not whimsical. It’s whimsical for adults to watch, so the wires get crossed. They are “recapturing” the feeling of watching themselves watch children, watching their own memories, not of being a child. To recapture your childhood energy, take something incredibly seriously.
