One last one for the night. Backstage at the Whisky a Go Go, Doors guitarist Robby Krieger and Ronnie Haran reminiscing about old times. Ronnie was the talent booker at the Whisky in 1966 when she saw The Doors performing at The London Fog. She booked them as the house band at the Whisky and the rest is Doors history.
Another place for Doors fans visiting Los Angeles to check out. The Santa Monica pier. More specifically UNDER the Santa Monica pier. That’s where Henry Diltz photo graphed the group in 1969. On top of the pier are food vendors, carnival games, a roller coaster and a Farris wheel. Underneath it’s still as dark and mysterious as it was back then, and there are still surfers right off the pier where the Jim Morrison, Ray Manzarek, Robby Krieger and John Densmore are looking.
@ChineseRocks77@TheDoors The Alta Cienega has been a “for hardcore fans only” since the early 2000s. It closed a few years ago and not really sure what’s going on with it at the moment. I’m pretty sure they whitewashed Jim’s room though, so all the fan graffiti is gone.
Over the next week or so I’ll be posting some Doors tidbits from my recent LA visit to see Robby Krieger play at the Whisky a Go Go. First update is how close we came to losing a bonafide Doors landmark. In this pic you can see a giant new development at the corner of La Cienega and Santa Monica Blvd. Now look at that tiny little building next to it on the right. That’s The Doors Workshop at 8512 Santa Monica Blvd where The Doors rehearsed and recorded the album LA Woman. Currently Tail O The Pup. We came THAT CLOSE to losing that building. Change is coming to that corner. Hoping we can keep the wrecking ball away from the Doors Workshop, Themis (aka Clear Thoughts building), Elektra and the Alta Cienega. Fingers crossed!!
I always love when I run into random things in Los Angeles that are exactly the same as they were when Jim Morrison was still walking the Earth. Here are two that I ran into last week when in town for Robby Krieger’s gig at the Whisky. The first is a fire hydrant right across the street from the Whisky a Go Go that was installed in June of 1965, right when Jim and Ray were graduating from UCLA. You can see the date on the hydrant. That corner was a Shell gas station at the time. The second is an entire section of concrete across the street from the Sunset Towers that was poured in 1955. You can see the date in the stamp. No doubt Jim walked across it quite a few times. With so much changing at such a fast pace these days, it’s nice to stumble across a few ancient relics from those days.
From what I’m hearing, X posts are now being translated into other country’s native languages. I’m seeing a lot of translated Japanese posts in my timeline. Any Japanese Doors fans out there?
@booman22 Not as good as LP art but still some pretty cool artwork on some. I think I bought that "best of" double CD box long before I even had a CD player. Just wanted it that bad.
I'm at an age where I now understand and truly appreciate why my dad, in the late 70s, sat in the dark with a few beers once a week and just listened to the "Elvis Live in Concert" by himself. It's almost like achieving enlightenment after all these years. #IAMMYDAD
@booman22 I wont call it a man cave.. but definitely a space I've been building up with all my favorite things. Those are mostly framed vintage large format Doors ads from Billboard magazine you see. The Doors had the same things hanging upstairs at The Doors' offices on La Cienega.
@booman22 Happy to do it. Have so much stuff over the years that I want to share. I ran it by Robby to make sure he was cool with it, and he said to go for it! So here we go!
I've started putting some of the concert footage I've shot over the years into YouTube. It will be mostly Robby Krieger and Ray Manzarek footage over the last 25 years. But you never know! Enjoy! https://t.co/AHSMtuhM5k
Was just reminded of this. One of the last times I saw Ray Manzarek play live in 2012. I was filming and there was an issue with his keyboard that no one would help him with. (Audio only) https://t.co/3ndn413tgx
