The reality is if we want to return to being title challengers, these are the wages that we need to pay to attract the best. if we want to stick to rigid wage structures etc, that's fine, then we simply wont compete with City, Arsenal, Liverpool for the best players on the market.

a couple reasons:

1. they buy top tier talent to begin with. so even if that player doesnt make it at City, theyre still an elite player that they can get a good fee for.

2. there is a halo effect of being at City.

The market has moved since two years ago, no point in comparing fees now to then.

Tchouaemeni was prob always contingent on Rodri going to RM. That was a bit out of our hands.

I don't think we were ever going to pay the fee + wages of Anderson. We simply aren't outbidding City for a player they want these days. It is what it is.

MF is the one we could've got had we been more proactive to wrap it up rather than waiting for the deal to come to us and thus letting Spurs swoop in. 85m seemed ridiculous at the time, but the market has clearly shifted, that now seems like the market price.

We have had ample time to sign him.

The longer we wait, the longer the risk shit can happen.

ie, Rodri going to Barca instead of RM. Baleba getting injured etc.

We could've taken matters into our own hands weeks ago.

Does he get us closer to winning the EPL? Compared to no further signings, sure. But we need to be prioritising the best targets if we're going to close the gap on Arsenal and City. Berge is fine, but he's underwhelming imo. If the goal is to make Europe, he'll do, if we're trying to win the EPL these types are not gonna get it done.
