Just got to Abuja and noticed something.

And it’s not just Abuja. I’ve seen the same thing with Bolt, inDrive, and UberX rides.

You book a ride. The driver calls you and asks you to cancel the trip so they don’t pay commission.

Then they still pick you up, sometimes charge you more, and now you’re technically taking a ride that is no longer being tracked by the platform.

That creates a problem bigger than commission.

The passenger loses some of the safety and accountability that comes with an active trip. The platform loses revenue. And drivers who follow the rules are disadvantaged.

But I think this can actually be detected.

If a driver and passenger have an accepted ride, the passenger cancels, and within the next few minutes both devices are within roughly 6–10 feet of each other and moving together at the same speed for several minutes, that’s a pretty strong signal that the cancelled ride may have continued offline.

Do this across repeated trips and you can build a fraud score instead of relying on the cancellation alone.

You don’t even need to automatically punish anyone. Flag the pattern, investigate it, and recover the commission where appropriate.

This is the kind of problem software can solve.
