The first Bishop of the Church was Edward Partridge. When he died, he left behind two daughters - Emily (16 years old) and Eliza (20 years old). The sisters sought out work opportunities to support themselves. Joseph Smith moved the sisters into his own home in Nauvoo. About a year later, in March 1843, Smith secretly married the two girls behind his wife's back.
Emily wrote in her journal, "This was done without the knowledge of Emma Smith."
However, Joseph Smith feared that Emma would learn about the secret marriages and pressed Emma to accept the idea of plural marriage. After much reluctance, she gave consent (later to be withdrawn) for Smith to marry a few other women. Smith tricked Emma into agreeing to let him marry Emily and Eliza. He manipulated her into choosing these two girls, letting her think it was her own choice.

"Two months afterward [Emma] consented to give her husband two wives, providing he would give her the privilege of choosing them. She accordingly chose my sister Eliza and myself, and to save family trouble Brother Joseph thought it best to have another ceremony performed. Accordingly on the 11th of May, 1843, we were sealed to Joseph Smith a second time, in Emma’s presence … From that very hour, however, Emma was our bitter enemy. We remained in the family several months after this, but things went from bad to worse until we were obligated to leave the house and find another home.”
The teenaged Emily Partridge said she “roomed” with the 36-year-old Joseph Smith the night following her marriage to him, and that they had “carnal intercourse”.
In 1903, Benjamin F. Johnson, the brother of Smith’s plural wives Almera and Delcena Johnson, told the Deseret News that he had provided a room in his own house for Joseph Smith to spend nights with Emily’s sister, Eliza Partridge. Johnson left five records confirming that his own sister, Almera, had sexual relations with Smith.
According to one unconfirmed statement from “Mrs. J.” (suspected to be the wife of Benjamin F. Johnson):
“Eliza Partridge, one of the many girls sealed to the prophet, used to sew in Emma’s room. Once, while Joseph was absent, Emma got to fighting with Eliza and threw her down the stairs. ‘That finished my sewing there,’ Eliza used to say.”
Whether that report is true, it is clear from Emily Partridge’s diary that despite Emma’s attempt to tolerate Smith’s relations with these other women, she simply could not do it. For a time, she allowed the new wives to live in the same home, but that came to a swift end.
Smith had told Emma that he was "restoring" an ancient, Old Testament practice. But that is a lie. Under Levitical law, it was strictly forbidden for a man to marry one sister and then another – possibly due to the fierce rivalry of Leah and Rachel, the sisters who married Jacob in the Genesis story. Whatever the reason for the prohibition, the law of Moses clearly forbade a man to have sexual relations with sisters.
Leviticus 18:18 states:
"Do not take your wife's sister as a rival wife and have sexual relations with her while your wife is living."
Smith's marrying of the Partridge sisters was a direct violation of this prohibition from God. Smith wed not only the Partridge sisters, but also the Lawrence sisters, Sarah and Maria. These marriages included cohabitation, as attested to under oath by another of Smith's wives, Lucy Walker.
In a 1902 affidavit, Lucy said:
"I was a plural wife of the Prophet Joseph Smith... [Emma] was well aware that he associated and cohabited with them as wives. The names of these women are Eliza and Emily Partridge, and Maria and Sarah Lawrence, all of whom knew that I too was his wife."
In case there is any question in your mind as to whether this cohabitation included sexual relations, Lucy Walker also said in 1887:
"[Emma] was aware that [Joseph] associated with them as wives within the meaning of all that word implies. This is proven by the fact that she herself, on several occasions, kept guard at the door to prevent disinterested persons from intruding..."
During the 1902 Temple Lot court case, Walker was asked under oath if she had lived together with Smith as his wife in all that word implies. She said, "He was my husband, sir." When asked if she spent the night with Smith on the day they were married, Walker refused to answer. And when pressed further, she replied that she could not be forced to answer that question. It is revealing that, not once, did Walker deny under oath that she slept with Smith.
(In addition to the Partridge sisters, the Lawrence sisters and the Johnson sisters, Smith also married the Huntington sisters.)
Beyond Smith’s practice of marrying sister pairs, he also married two sets of mothers and daughters: Patty Bartlett Sessions and her daughter Sylvia Porter Sessions and Clarissa Reed Hancock and her daughter Nancy Marinda Johnson. This was a violation of God's law. Leviticus 18:17 clearly indicates that marrying mother-daughter pairs was "wickedness".
Mormons who stick their heads in the sand and refuse to acknowledge the overwhelming amount of evidence of Smith’s lecherous behaviors are lying to themselves. And, Mormons who defend Joseph Smith's adulteries do so at the expense of their own integrity.
What Smith did was not lawful under the state of Illinois and it was also a violation of the laws of God. God did not send an angel with a flaming sword to threaten to kill Smith unless women agreed to secretly marry and/or fornicate with him. Smith was an adulterer who used his status and influence as a "prophet" to prey upon women to gratify his own narcissistic hubris and his unbridled lusts.

William Law was the Second Counselor in the First Presidency of the Church when Joseph Smith tried to seduce his wife, Jane Law.
According to Brigham Young's plural wife Ann Eliza Young, "[Smith] made his visit to [Law's] wife in the middle of the night when he knew her husband to be absent. Joseph asked her to give him half her love; she was at liberty to keep the other half for her husband." (Young, "Wife No. 19, 1876, pg. 61)
Incensed, William Law began protesting Smith's attempts to seduce his wife. Smith denied the allegations and had Law excommunicated. Undeterred, Law spent thousands of dollars to procure a printing press to start his own newspaper, the Nauvoo Expositor, to bring Smith's actions to the light of public scrutiny.
After the first (and only) issue was published, Smith, as mayor of Nauvoo, convened an emergency city council meeting and ordered the printing press to be destroyed.
“To the Marshal of said City, greeting. You are here commanded to destroy the printing press from whence issues the Nauvoo Expositor, and pi the type of said printing establishment in the street, and burn all the Expositors and libelous handbills found in said establishment; and if resistance be offered to your execution of this order by the owners or others, demolish the house; and if anyone threatens you or the mayor or the officers of the city, arrest those who threaten you, and fail not to execute this order without delay, and make due return hereon. By order of the City Council, Joseph Smith, Mayor.” (Joseph Smith – History of the Church, vol. 6, pg. 448)
Smith instructed chief of police and commander of the Nauvoo Legion, Jonathan Dunham, to rally the militia and assist city marshal John Greene with the attack. The men led a frenzied mob of over 200 Mormons, armed with guns and knives, to Law's brick office. They threw out Law's associates, Chauncey Higbee and Charles Foster and proceeded to destroy not only the printing press, but the entire office.
“They tumbled the press and materials into the street, and set fire to them, and demolished the machinery with a sledgehammer, and injured the building very materially. We made no resistance, but looked on and felt revenge, but leave it for the public to avenge this climax of insult and injury.” Charles Foster (Warsaw Signal, June 12, 1844)
The Mormon mob grabbed everything they could get their hands on, regardless of whether it was related to the newspaper, and threw it into the street. They set fire to all of Law's property and then travelled to Smith's home to proudly report their work of destruction.
“About 8 pm, the Marshal returned and reported that he had removed the press, type, printed paper, and fixtures into the street, and destroyed them. The posse accompanied by some hundreds of the citizens, returned with the Marshal to the front of the mansion, when I gave them a short address, and told them they had done right. I then blessed them in the name of the Lord. This speech was loudly greeted by the assembly with three-times-cheers. The posse and assembly then dispersed all in good order.” Joseph Smith (History of the Church, vol. 6, ch. 21)
Joseph Smith, in a desperate effort to prevent knowledge of his secret harem of dozens of women from being made public, had become a tyrant and an enemy of the people. He violated the laws of Illinois and the constitution of the United States of America that guaranteed freedom of the press.
For this heinous crime, Smith was arrested and taken to Carthage Jail. He dispatched Jonathan Dunham back to Nauvoo to order the Nauvoo Legion to march on the jail and set him free. Dunham, however, did not obey the order. After Smith shared a bottle of wine with some of his fellow Saints, he came under sudden attack.

Smith instructed chief of police and commander of the Nauvoo Legion, Jonathan Dunham, to rally the militia and assist city marshal John Greene with the attack. The men led a frenzied mob of over 200 Mormons, armed with guns and knives, to Law's brick office. They threw out Law's associates, Chauncey Higbee and Charles Foster and proceeded to destroy not only the printing press, but the entire office.
“They tumbled the press and materials into the street, and set fire to them, and demolished the machinery with a sledgehammer, and injured the building very materially. @TeeplesCY I’ve read the #bookofmormon many times until I realised it’s bad, boring and a book without any value. There is no evidence of the nephites or the lamanites or the jaredites anywhere in the americas.

JOSEPH SMITH’S SEX WITH SETS OF SISTERS
The first Bishop of the Church was Edward Partridge. When he died, he left behind two daughters - Emily (16 years old) and Eliza (20 years old). The sisters sought out work opportunities to support themselves. Joseph Smith moved the sisters into his own home in Nauvoo. About a year later, in March 1843, Smith secretly married the two girls behind his wife's back.
Emily wrote in her journal, "This was done without the knowledge of Emma Smith."
However, Joseph Smith feared that Emma would learn about the secret marriages and pressed Emma to accept the idea of plural marriage. After much reluctance, she gave consent (later to be withdrawn) for Smith to marry a few other women. Smith tricked Emma into agreeing to let him marry Emily and Eliza. He manipulated her into choosing these two girls, letting her think it was her own choice.
Emily wrote in her diary:
"Two months afterward [Emma] consented to give her husband two wives, providing he would give her the privilege of choosing them. She accordingly chose my sister Eliza and myself, and to save family trouble Brother Joseph thought it best to have another ceremony performed. Accordingly on the 11th of May, 1843, we were sealed to Joseph Smith a second time, in Emma’s presence … From that very hour, however, Emma was our bitter enemy. We remained in the family several months after this, but things went from bad to worse until we were obligated to leave the house and find another home.”
The teenaged Emily Partridge said she “roomed” with the 36-year-old Joseph Smith the night following her marriage to him, and that they had “carnal intercourse”.
In 1903, Benjamin F. Johnson, the brother of Smith’s plural wives Almera and Delcena Johnson, told the Deseret News that he had provided a room in his own house for Joseph Smith to spend nights with Emily’s sister, Eliza Partridge. Johnson left five records confirming that his own sister, Almera, had sexual relations with Smith.
According to one unconfirmed statement from “Mrs. J.” (suspected to be the wife of Benjamin F. Johnson):

Smith had told Emma that he was "restoring" an ancient, Old Testament practice. But that is a lie. Under Levitical law, it was strictly forbidden for a man to marry one sister and then another – possibly due to the fierce rivalry of Leah and Rachel, the sisters who married Jacob in the Genesis story. Whatever the reason for the prohibition, the law of Moses clearly forbade a man to have sexual relations with sisters.
Leviticus 18:18 states:
"Do not take your wife's sister as a rival wife and have sexual relations with her while your wife is living."
Smith's marrying of the Partridge sisters was a direct violation of this prohibition from God. Smith wed not only the Partridge sisters, but also the Lawrence sisters, Sarah and Maria. These marriages included cohabitation, as attested to under oath by another of Smith's wives, Lucy Walker.
In a 1902 affidavit, Lucy said:
"I was a plural wife of the Prophet Joseph Smith... [Emma] was well aware that he associated and cohabited with them as wives. The names of these women are Eliza and Emily Partridge, and Maria and Sarah Lawrence, all of whom knew that I too was his wife."
In case there is any question in your mind as to whether this cohabitation included sexual relations, Lucy Walker also said in 1887:
"[Emma] was aware that [Joseph] associated with them as wives within the meaning of all that word implies. This is proven by the fact that she herself, on several occasions, kept guard at the door to prevent disinterested persons from intruding..."
During the 1902 Temple Lot court case, Walker was asked under oath if she had lived together with Smith as his wife in all that word implies. She said, "He was my husband, sir." It is revealing that, not once, did Walker deny under oath that she slept with Smith.

Beyond Smith’s practice of marrying sister pairs, he also married two sets of mothers and daughters: Patty Bartlett Sessions and her daughter Sylvia Porter Sessions and Clarissa Reed Hancock and her daughter Nancy Marinda Johnson. This was a violation of God's law. Leviticus 18:17 clearly indicates that marrying mother-daughter pairs was "wickedness".
Mormons who stick their heads in the sand and refuse to acknowledge the overwhelming amount of evidence of Smith’s lecherous behaviors are lying to themselves. And, Mormons who defend Joseph Smith's adulteries do so at the expense of their own integrity.
What Smith did was not lawful under the state of Illinois and it was also a violation of the laws of God. God did not send an angel with a flaming sword to threaten to kill Smith unless women agreed to secretly marry and/or fornicate with him. Smith was an adulterer who used his status and influence as a "prophet" to prey upon women to gratify his own narcissistic hubris and his unbridled lusts.
