The great, George Carlin, once said imagine how stupid the average population is and then realize half of us are even stupider - I think he wasn't just joking, you know.

Religions don't mention it is as sacred, and worse yet there are still those of us who use free speech to explain to us that free speech is, in fact, bad (thank goodness, the funny side of irony can sometimes ease the pain). Simply put: freedom of expression is the bedrock of our democratic societies, the bedrock of all our liberties, we can not have a reasonable and flourishing society with fear of persecution or violence from any government, organisation or person merely for speaking our minds.

What alternative do we have other than using free speech to convince and reason with each other in regards to, like, everything?

It comes with the territory that freedom of expression must include the freedom to offend. It is not a sin to offend, nobody has the right to be not offended, and if you are offended, frankly, that is your problem?

All dictatorships, totalitarian, and authoritarian regimes by its natural form seek to silence their oppositions by imprisoning, torturing, and killing, for one very evil reason: they do not wish their authority to be challenged, as the oppressors know the first condition of progress is the removal of censorship. These tyrants cite national security, terrorism, hate speech, and religious superiority as grounds to oppress their opposition.

Because of this injustice and oppression we need absolute freedom of expression for everyone - as we all benefit from it - freedom of expression is that fundamental of a human right.

No one can absolutely rule over anyone, not any government, not any God, not even we can - you and I - if we tried (think about it: we all fucked up at some point. Was it what you wanted? Was it your free will to fuck up?)

Free speech for everyone means absolute freedom of expression: even hate speech - that's the price of admission we have to pay for the marketplace of ideas - after all, words do not kill, the actual psychical action people take to kill someone kills. I think this idea was best said by Rosa Luxemburg, "Freedom is always, and exclusively, freedom for the one who thinks differently." By even seeking to censor fascists, racists, and stupid people, you not only limit your chance to reason with them to find the root causes of the problem, you have also crossed the line to stand alongside the tyrants. The censorship of speech will simply not make them go away but drive it underground to fester in secret.

On the flip side, by stifling any kind of speech, everyone else loses their ability to hear and listen to a speech that may have at least a pinch of truth to it. 'No one is perfect', and 'we have two ears and one mouth because we all should listen twice as much', as the sayings go, don't you want to better yourself all the time, how else do you achieve this without hearing and rebutting people putting across their opposing views? Free speech for everyone means you and I can can be wrong and then corrected by anyone with a good enough argument, and vice versa - it works both ways. The free exchange of ideas sorts good ideas from bad ones - it's just a natural process.

This is why we must defend freedom of expression for those whom we even disagree with. Silencing people is the essence of thought police. If we can't all have absolute freedom of expression, who will then decide what is respectful, sensitive, and insulting for us? Is there anyone in the world that can decide for all of us? No one can have that kind of power. ‘If liberty means anything’, as George Orwell once put it, ‘it means the right to tell people what they do not want to hear’. Take this right away and we are all doomed to live in an absurd and corrupted civilization.
