As deafness is seen as disability, deaf communities are considered passive consumers of cinematic culture rather than a creative force. It was quite opposite.

Currently reading Deafening Modernism by Rebecca Sanchez and love how she analyses Ch. Chaplin's Modern Times in relation to exoticization of the Other in the 1920s. The main book's argument interestingly adds to L. Davis' concept of 'deafening moment'
