Feels like a full rebuild this season.

The team’s being reconstructed. Villa Park’s being reconstructed. Get the youngsters a full year in the Prem and hopefully sneak back into Europe.

I’m down for the change at AVFC, and all the young’uns look good on a spreadsheet, but we’ve lost:

Tielemans — Belgian captain. Gone.
Konsa — VC, defensive organiser. Gone.
Martinez — Ex-VC, World Cup winner. Gone.
Digne — vocal, experienced. Gone.
Rogers — big personality in the dressing room. Gone.
Watkins — work ethic, “professionalism”. Gone.

What’s replacing all that personality and leadership?#avfc

@EzechielsWheel I get your point, but Watkins was one of the Championship’s best strikers + the English tax 😂 He’s since consistently hit 20+ goal involvements in the Prem. Chelsea don’t even want Jackson, so how’s he doubled in value? We can’t get £10m for Martinez 😂

Chelsea bought Jackson for £30m. Two average seasons later they decide they don’t want him. Bayern borrow him, decide they don’t want him either… and somehow he’s now worth £65m 😂

My theory on the Watkins situation…

Last year Arsenal wanted him. Villa said no. Ollie didn’t kick up a fuss, kept his head down and gave everything for the club.

Then Arsenal win the league.

He goes away with England, sees and hears about players making career moves, has Ivan Toney telling him about the ridiculous money and lifestyle in Saudi, then comes back to Villa and watches teammates move on to bigger opportunities.

Digne → PSG
Tielemans → Man United
Konsa → Arsenal
Rogers → Chelsea
Martinez → wants out

Then imagine Konsa asks to leave and Villa let him go straight off the bat — to Arsenal, who let’s face it are probably going to win it again.

If you’re Watkins, surely part of you is thinking:

“Hang on. I wanted Arsenal last year. You blocked it. I stayed professional, got on with my job and could’ve had a Premier League title. Now he asks and gets his move?”

Villa winning the Europa League may have felt like the peak of this group’s journey.

Some of these players probably now want that next step. challenging for league titles and the Champions League. That’s where Villa want to get to, but realistically we’re not there yet.

And don’t get me wrong, if we’d kept the core of this team together, I’d have fancied us to have a proper go at the Premier League this season because the league looks wide open.

My guess is Watkins has now decided he wants his move too.

Emery doesn’t like it — and in my opinion probably knows there aren’t many strikers out there who can replace everything Watkins does for this team.

Watkins doesn’t like Villa’s response.

And somewhere along the line, it’s turned sour.

That would make Emery’s “ask his agent” comments and Watkins not playing make a lot more sense.

I also wouldn’t be surprised if there’s been a bit of a bust-up. Emery is an emotional manager ( we’ve all seen how he reacts after defeats by not shaking mangers hands) so I can completely imagine Watkins saying he wants out, Emery taking it badly and basically says: “Fine, then you’re not playing.”

What makes it worse is last season, when Martinez wanted out, we at least had Bizot ready to step in.

This time we’ve potentially got an unhappy Watkins and no obvious striker fit to replace him.

I don’t think there’s necessarily one innocent party and one guilty party here.

It could simply be a player who’s given Villa years of service and feels he’s earned his opportunity to move on, versus a manager and club who know how difficult he is to replace.

Could be completely wrong, but that’s how I’m reading it.
