“I get it—the joke is more important than our existence.” Devastating, brilliant, necessary piece by @bichminhnguyen@NewYorker : America Ruined My Name for Me https://t.co/3yYMVmTSot
“Misogyny and racism have never lived neatly in their separate categories; they ravage by mutually reinforcing a narrative of a dehumanized ‘other.’ A wrenching, necessary piece by @JiayangFan@NewYorker https://t.co/C38cjqNt0r
Find me an AA woman who’s EVER experienced racism separate from the reduction of her humanity to how well she might serve a white man’s sexual fantasy. #GTFOH#nameit#stopasianhate#StopAAPIHate
I don't know what to say. Asians in America have been saying the same thing for so long and so often get dismissed or ignored. The current wave of anti-Asian rhetoric and violence is really an ongoing one.
For everyone who needs a space and a moment of solidarity with one another, there are a few different events being planned. Here are a few of them. I will keep adding as I get fliers for other ones.
... you’ve been part of the problem. This isn’t to shame anyone, tho the shame has to belong to ppl other than kids like mine. It’s to say you can also be part of the solution. And you can start now.
At 6 & 7, my kids already had “slant eyes” pulled at them, “ching chong” jabbered at them, heard “Chinamen bow like this” so many times that, for too long, they internalized the shame & wished they were white. #StopAsianHate#StopAAPIHate
If you’ve read Dr. Seuss to your kids w/o discussing the gross caricatures; if you don’t own books by AA authors; if you haven’t taught them abt, say, the Chinese Exclusion Act; if you think you don’t need to teach them abt anti-Asian racism bc they would never do that ...
They don’t need anyone to connect the dots from the history of anti-Asian violence in America to their formative childhood experiences to “Kung flu” and dead women at spas. They know it in their blood. #StopAsianHate#StopAAPIHate
please talk to your children if you haven't already done so, Asian babies across America are being told by classmates that they're to blame for the pandemic & for the deaths of millions. @nicolesjchung has really good advice on why "there’s no neutral choice or position here"
How about instead of posting a yellow square and leaving it at that you stop laughing along with your lil friend's racist jokes and call that shit out https://t.co/wAHySgf6EH
