A man held an SBI Life policy. He died coming down a flight of stairs, a head injury from the fall. The police recorded it, twice, across their reports.

His widow filed the Rs 5 lakh claim. SBI Life rejected it. Reason: he hadn't disclosed a past cancer diagnosis when he bought the policy.

Sit with that. He died from a fall. They denied the claim over cancer.

The commissions asked the one question that ended it: did the illness he didn't disclose have anything to do with how he died? It didn't. A fall down the stairs and an old cancer diagnosis are not the same event, and no amount of paperwork could make them one.

The principle is settled. Non-disclosure only sinks a claim if it's material, if it actually connects to the loss. And the burden of proving that sits with the insurer, not the widow. SBI Life couldn't carry it.

The NCDRC threw out the company's final appeal in June 2025. Rs 5 lakh upheld.

The rejection was about a cancer that didn't kill him. The claim was about a fall that did. It took thirteen years and three forums to keep those two facts apart.
