Evan Barker was raised to be a Democrat. She was born into a Kansas City union family, campaigned for Barack Obama while she was still in high school, and worked as a community organizer for Hillary Clinton in 2015.

She went on to become one of the most effective fundraisers in progressive politics, raising money for Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Cori Bush, and Jasmine Crockett.

She helped the far left take over her party from the inside. Now she has walked away from all of it, and what she witnessed on the inside should alarm every working family in America.

Understand who runs the Democratic Party today. Barker describes her old job as helping progressive insurgents infiltrate the party from within, and the insurgents won.

Bernie Sanders, a self-described socialist, has shaped the party’s economic agenda for a decade.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has built a fundraising machine that rivals the Democratic National Committee itself. New York City just handed its mayor’s office to Zohran Mamdani, a proud Democratic Socialist.

The party of Harry Truman and the lunch-pail Democrat has been captured by radicals whose ideas trace back to Karl Marx rather than Kansas City.

Their politics accomplish one thing brilliantly, and that is raising money. Outrage fills the small-dollar inboxes and coastal billionaires bankroll the revolution. The rest of America gets stuck with the bill.

The moment that broke Barker came at billionaire Tom Steyer’s mansion in one of the wealthiest neighborhoods in San Francisco.

Waiters glided through the crowd with silver trays of hors d’oeuvres. Champagne glasses clinked in front of a view of the Golden Gate Bridge. The guests were overwhelmingly white&extremely rich.

And up at the microphone, the head of Steyer’s youth voter organization announced that the working-class voters who left the party for Trump were gone for good and were not worth winning back.

The wealthy crowd applauded every word.

Barker was seven months pregnant&standing in that crowd. She knew the speaker personally. When she learned that Steyer planned to pour 60 million dollars into the midterms, she made a practical pitch. Invest some of it in Missouri, her home state, where

Democrats had won a statewide race as recently as 2018&where plenty of voters had loyally backed the party for generations. The answer came back with a smirk: “We will never, ever go to Missouri.”

A party awash in billionaire money looked at the state where Harry Truman was raised, a state built by union labor&declared it permanently beneath their attention.

Barker reveals that the progressive donor class had become obsessed with flipping Texas instead. Their theory was that changing demographics would eventually hand them Texas and remake the electoral map forever, so they would never again need the voters they dismissed as deplorables.

They convinced themselves that young voters of color were natural progressives who would replace the union households of the Midwest.

As Barker points out, the theory had one big problem. Texas has not elected a Democrat statewide since 1994. The party abandoned winnable ground to chase a fantasy, and working-class Latino voters declined to play the role the consultants assigned them.

Barker knows what abandonment costs because her family lived it. Her father was born in St. Joseph, Missouri, about an hour north of Kansas City. It was once a booming industrial town with high-paying factory jobs for men without college degrees. Then came NAFTA, signed into law by Bill Clinton. The Lee Jeans factory closed in 1996,&people in her family knew the workers who lost their livelihoods.

Today, St. Joseph is marked by abandoned factories&boarded-up buildings.

The Rust Belt and the Midwest took a far heavier share of those job losses than the rest of the country.
