For over one month, the Doctors’ Quarters at No. 1 Olumeni Street, Old GRA, Port Harcourt, has been without electricity.

Despite repeated interventions by Hospital Management and ARD RSUTH, PHED has failed to resolve the problem.

This is emotional blackmail.
A doctor was assaulted, and somehow the focus has shifted from the violence (which has been normalized) to making doctors feel guilty for reacting.

Mind you, reports said he was operating on a patient in theatre when the incident happened…I wonder what happened to that patient.

They literally fired shots and sprayed tear gas too.
But it’s still the doctor that should be thinking about the patients on admission?

Another reminder to my healthcare colleagues.
You are one of the poorest paid healthcare worker on earth but guess what?
That's not the worst part.
A lot of your patients hate you, apparently for no reason.
I don't know why but they don't see you as human.
They see you as a tool that is created to stop them from dying and fuck everything else.
They don't care if you have a family or even if you don't get paid, as long as they get treated.
They don't care if you're overworked or exposed to danger or even if you die while helping them.
The believe it's your right to die to save their pathetic lives.
Then, with the rise of litigation, they'll sue your ass for the flimsiest reasons just to escape generational poverty.
So don't let anyone gaslight you about any useless oath, do your job and go home.

Another general hospital about to collapse.

I hope you remember that the next time a patient dies from a failed healthcare system in this country, you remember your radio silence towards the doctor that died from the same system and would think twice before blaming the doctors for not performing miracles.

A common misconception people have about doctors is that we know all when it comes to medicine and we never get tired or sleep. They forget that doctors are humans too, we forget sometimes and need to consult our textbooks or google, and we also definitely need rest to function.

Being a doctor in this country is hard. Everyone expects you to jump in and save lives with little to no thought to your physical and mental health or even thinking about how you would pay your bills.

Maybe when the house officers also go on strike, maybe when the consultants decide to stand with resident doctors, maybe when all hospitals in Nigeria shut down, maybe then the voices of Nigerian doctors would be heard.

And to everyone that chose bigotry after living through years of endless bad governance and witnessing the massacre from the endSARS protest, I pray this country happens to you more than the rest of us.
Nigerians are our own problem, not just the thieves in power.
