Why are PhD students in Nigeria paying school fees?

PhD is not school in the normal sense.
It’s research work.
You’re producing knowledge.
You’re teaching undergrads.
You’re publishing papers.
You’re raising the university’s ranking.

In every sane system:
– PhD students are funded
– Their tuition is covered
– They are paid stipends for research and teaching

In Nigeria? We treat the highest level of knowledge production like a burden instead of an investment.

You can’t starve research and expect innovation.

🇳🇬 Dear Nigerians,

We have carefully reviewed the released Certified True Copies of the Tax Reform Acts and the gazettes your government now parades.

We have also taken note of the dates boldly printed on them.

With that established, let us be clear.

Your government is not smart. They simply assume many of you are ignorant.

After weeks of sustained public pressure, they issued this clumsy press statement claiming they had “released” the gazetted copies of the Tax Reform Acts, applauding themselves as leaders of a transparent government.

That claim is false. It is insulting and honestly misleading.

While the world was focused on Venezuela, the House of Representatives, in quiet coordination with the Presidency, released what it now calls Certified True Copies (CTCs) of the four Tax Reform Acts.

They even congratulated themselves and praised the Speaker’s so-called “transparency drive.”

If you examine the released files, you will find presidential assent pages attached and a Google Drive link to gazettes dated June 26, 2025.

This is nowhere near transparency. It is damage control.

The timing tells the real story.

The four Acts are now being presented as the “AUTHENTIC” versions, conveniently cleansed of the coercive provisions that triggered national outrage.

No compulsory 20 percent appeal deposits.
No unchecked garnishee powers without court orders.
Oversight restored.
Due process acknowledged.

Fine. At least public fears have been partially allayed.

But this question remains unavoidable: if these gazetted copies were genuinely published in June 2025, why were Nigerians previously shown different texts? Why wait until January 2026, after implementation commenced on January 1, before releasing these CTCs? Why only act after public outrage peaked, following Hon. Dasuki’s warning and interventions by other prominent Nigerians?

This release is an admission by stealth.

They are loudly conceding that rogue versions indeed circulated. They refuse to say who inserted those clauses, who printed them, who distributed them, and under whose authority Nigerians were subjected to texts that were never law.

The press statement dismisses the earlier versions as “unauthorised and misleading,” instructs citizens to ignore them, and praises institutional memory while the Betara-led ad hoc committee drags on with no timeline, no findings, and no consequences.

Nigerians, re-gazetting does not cure the offence. It sanitises the record and evades responsibility.

Post-assent alteration is not an error.
It is forgery. It is uttering. It is conspiracy. It is misconduct in public office. It is legislative usurpation under Section 4 of the Constitution.

If the CTCs reflect what the National Assembly actually passed, then the earlier circulating texts were criminal fakes and indeed doctored, and someone must answer for publishing fake laws as binding statutes.

So far, there are no conclusions. No prosecutions. No apologies. Only PR and forced normalisation as usual.

But the deeper danger here is precedent. If laws can be quietly altered and later “corrected” without consequence, then legislation becomes an executive plaything.

Nigerians, please do not be distracted by executive conspiracies and shenanigans. We are not fools like the nepotistic zombies who applaud their foolishness.

This was a legislative smokescreen.

Please let us continue to demand the essentials. A full independent probe must be conducted.

Those who altered our laws must be identified. They must be prosecuted once forgery is confirmed. There must be immediate suspension of implementation until this issue is cleared.

Anything less normalises CONSTITUTIONAL TREASON.

Laws must not become playthings in the hands of executive mischief makers. We are not fools, even though we are led by chronic kakistocrats.

NIGERIAN STRAWBERRIES

Nigeria built the strawberry value chain on a runway..the plane left! Now the harvest has nowhere to go.

We’ve entered strawberry season (November - February) with no credible way to move berries out of Jos.

For years, Arik was the only lifeline. In our own operations, we paid more per kg in air cargo than we paid farmers per kg of produce. Logistics cost more than the fruit, and we still paid for it, because at least the berries arrived fresh and wholesome across the country.

But overnight, it collapsed, Arik stopped flying into Jos (Oct 2025). ValueJet is now the only carrier flying out from Jos, and they refused to carry strawberries.

So today, Nigeria has strawberries, but Nigeria cannot move strawberries.

So you would suggest using the road? Only if you’ve never tried it.

Fresh strawberries survive 1–4 days at room temperature. That is the entire window.

On our last attempt by road, we used Styrofoam boxes (additional cost), packed ice for 48 hours, turned prayer warrior against checkpoint delays and rough roads, but still lost 20–30% to sweating fruit, broken boxes, heat pockets and delays. You can’t get any refund, just absorb the losses and move on.
Road is not a solution today. It’s a controlled disaster.

One question from a farmer tells the whole story.

“Should I harvest, or let it rot so the loss impact is smaller?”

Peak harvest is here (15–30 tons/hectare), but farmers are debating whether picking their crop is the bigger loss. This is what a system failure sounds like, not some headlines or reports.

And this is not only a cold chain issue, the flaw runs deeper.

Nigeria built production without securing logistics, food security is logistics security. We’re not losing strawberries because farmers don’t know how to grow them, we’re losing them because a berry’s entire value chain depended on a plane we didn’t control.

If Plateau produces ~700 tons this season and we lose 50% due to lack of movement, 350 tons will rot in 120 days. By April, Lagos will import strawberries, puree and concentrate while fresh berries rot in Jos.

This season will decide whether Nigeria has a strawberry industry or just a strawberry harvest.

But this is the conversation Nigeria avoids, we celebrate yields without asking how food moves across the value chain, we talk about food security while losing food to logistics, not production, we push “value addition” while value dies at the farm gate, long before processing ever begins.

Strawberries are just the clearest example of a delicate fruit with a 4-day lifespan exposing a national blind spot.

However this isn’t a tragedy waiting to happen. It’s a test.

If harvest only creates beauty on the Plateau and scarcity in Lagos and the rest of the country, the numbers will speak louder than any report.

At the end of four months, one question will remain. What is the value of production if we cannot deliver the product?

Until we answer that honestly, we will keep planting pride and harvesting loss.
