I fully understand that it is easier for some people to attack me than to accept the reality I was pointing out. Earlier today, I made a post condemning the brutal violence against our brother, Abba, who was reportedly murdered by bandits even after a N10 million ransom had been paid to them. Sadly, instead of focusing on the tragedy and the injustice of what happened to him, some chose to use the post to attack me.

I honestly don’t know whether those people genuinely misunderstood what I meant when I said we as a society failed Abba or it was simply another deliberate attempt to twist my words unfairly. Saying that society failed him does not mean that you, as individuals, personally failed him or that you aided the atrocities committed against him.

Society is made up of all of us, you, me and the other people, the good and the bad among us. Even those who kidnapped, tortured and murdered him are part of that same society, though they represent its worst elements. Likewise, those who provided the bandits cover or assisted them in any way are also part of our society. My point was about a collective failure of the system and environment we all live in, not a personal accusation against every individual.

Inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi raji’un! It is traumatic seeing the circulating news that the family of our brother, Abba, an NYSC corps member who was abducted by terrorists on his way from Gusau to Sokoto, has reportedly lost hope and planning to perform his funeral prayers. I learn that the abductors demanded a ransom of N10 million and the family paid the money, yet he was still not released.

In moments like this, you would see how the system has failed him and indeed, how we, as a society, have failed him. May Allah grant his family strength and patience in this time.
