I believe Public Safety is the #1 job of government. If people don’t feel safe in their community, nothing else matters. Three weeks ago at the Neshoba County Fair, I highlighted the tragic murder in my community of Billy and Carol Blair by a 17 year old and the awful paralyzing shooting of Deputy Yates Rodney by the brothers. In my speech on June 25th I pointed out Mississippi’s broken youth court system, the dramatic rise in juvenile crime and I called for a reformation of our entire youth court and juvenile justice system. I want to give a sincere THANK YOU to Governor Tate Reeves and our Republican Legislature for passing a new youth court bill that many, including myself, believe will bring more accountability and uniformity statewide. This is great news. I spoke last night at the Mississippi Deputy Sheriffs’ Association Annual Banquet, where I announced I will continue to push for a 400 bed youth criminal penitentiary system where dangerous youth can be removed from our schools and communities, and they will be placed permanently on the right path until they choose to earn their way out with a diploma or a job skill. This still needs to happen. I also believe our Legislature must act in the near future to fund and strengthen our state employees PERS retirement system. Law enforcement, firefighters and other first responders put your lives on the line every day. The world is a much more dangerous place than it was just 10 years ago. Our first responders put their lives on the line daily. To our first responders, you deserve true and meaningful retirement benefits from the State of Mississippi. As Deputy Rodney’s situation proves, you also deserve benefits for injuries, paralysis or disability in the line of duty. I am 100 percent committed to making that happen for you. And I will. Thank you!
