Expressing firmly held opinions is valid, understandable and acceptable. Imposing those opinions on others, and/or dismissing/ denigrating differing opinions, is not. Opinions should never be presented as facts…. in my opinion!!!
As the coaching and mentoring module comes to a close, there is an overriding sense that as leaders,we never stop learning. I thoroughly enjoyed this chapter!@patriciamannixm @niamhickey@Leaders_SoE
LaTonya Wilkins podcast highlights leading with empathy and curiosity. While holding a mirror to your leader you must also hold a mirror to yourself. Psychological safety is the goal. #valued#safe@niamhickey @patriciamannixm @Leaders_SoE
A strength based approach can be so powerful! We should be constantly trying to fill our cup and the cups of our colleagues and students and everyone around us! Comparison is the thief of joy! 🙌#positivepsychology@niamhickey@Leaders_SoE @patriciamannixm
Courageous conversations involve a delicate balance of listening to understand and meaningful feedback. Tone and pace are paramount to this process. Great leaders make this look easy! @Leaders_SoE @patriciamannixm @niamhickey
A public/vocal put down and dismissal of a positive suggestion, ensure that the recipient shuts up and may not make another contribution for at least six months. Onlookers who keep their heads down and say nothing, effectively encourage/empower the offender.
A little nugget of advice I received early in my career was to always think in the grey. Black or white thinking makes it harder to move from your opinion, even when you hear something which might change your mind. #conflictresolution@Leaders_SoE @patriciamannixm @niamhickey
Reflecting on workplace culture and furthermore, workplace conversations this week. The question is raised,do we enter into a conversation with a fixed agenda or do we engage in meaningful dialogue where everyone wins? #growthmindset@Leaders_SoE @patriciamannixm @niamhickey
Vital in appointing a colleague/leader is her/his level of positivity.
Positivity is contagious as is negativity. Someone prone to negativity doesn’t even have to come in, they only have to park their car in the car park & it shoots ahead of them affecting everyone in its path.
Effective leaders encourage and welcome different/contradictory opinions/approaches. They acknowledge and adopt a solution that is better than their own. How isolating/ disempowering is it when the voicing of an alternative point of view is regarded as a declaration of war!!
The idea of a chemistry check before proceeding with coaching is an important step. If you can’t build a rapport the person, you’ll never achieve your goal. This emphasises the need for a foundation of trust, empathy and connection in a coaching relationship #pdsl#leadership
Listening is a skill that can be developed and it begins with self-awareness. This stood out for me in this week’s content “If you want to listen to the other side you have to learn to listen to yourself” William Ury @patriciamannixm @niamhickey@Leaders_SoE#leadership#pdsl
Alma Harris brings an awareness to the power of informal leaders in schools. I hope every single informal leader feels valued in their role. #aspiringleaders@niamhickey @patriciamannixm @Leaders_SoE
