Our latest research on the NGO halo effect as an explanation for NGO unethical behavior is out! We find + 150 cases of UB, existence of the NGO halo effect, & show how the halo explains UB. See: https://t.co/b6uUtWojfm Allison R. Russel @muelkaptein@LucasMeijs
@carolinefiennes@porticusglobal@Campbellreviews prized the contribution of the Evidence & Gap Map - a compilation of rigorous evidence of what works, what doesn't, and what we don't know to prevent, detect & respond to child abuse in and by institutions - led by @carolinefiennes.
I was interviewed by @Tosca5Oaks on how my #PhD research on the #NGO#haloeffect can explain #safeguarding incidents. When peoples' morality is assumed😇, then ethics programs aren't thought to be needed🤨. Moral naiveté can increase risk for SfG violations. #podcast out Jan'22.
As part of my #PhD#research with @muelkaptein and @LucasMeijs we develop an assessment tool to determine if, and to what extent, the #NGO#haloeffect exists. We also research mechanisms that can dim the halo effect as a means to reduce NGO #unethical behavior.
@debruin_isabel@saskia_ozinga@muelkaptein@LucasMeijs Fascinating, but I wonder if researchers have recommendations for addressing this risk. Not an expert, but might one ask staff to anonymously report behaviors in colleagues that could put the organization and its mission at risk? Or perhaps invite a yearly self-assessment.
Examples of #NGO#unethical behavior, which can be explained by the NGO #haloeffect. An NGO can glorify its mission, and in so doing can prioritize achieving it over how it is achieved. A toxic work culture can be justified by the NGO as a means to achieving its good mission.
@debruin_isabel@pdavies5@muelkaptein@LucasMeijs Very useful insights, However, the structural problem within NGOs - i.e. concentration of unaccountable power in leadership, when combined with halo effect, can lead to serious abuses, human rights violations and toxic work culture.
Stumbled upon this interesting paper of @debruin_isabel@muelkaptein#LucasMeijs on how NGO can behave badly.
The paper is relevant for many developing countries where NGO's (international and national) fill the gap of failed states administration.

@matthewtbeard Not that concept exactly, but from a quick search it seems like it relates to an 'ends justifies the means' mentality. I refer to it as moral justification in the paper. Will read more into it - thanks for the tip!
@matthewtbeard Hi Matt - not a set of the largest ethical risks facing the world, but a set of 3 ethical risks that NGOs can face by nature of their belief in their own moral goodness https://t.co/muED4DNED6
Organizational characteristics that explain why NGOs are morally 'good' can be the same characteristics that can explain (and invite) their unethical behavior.
Really relevant application of the halo effect by @debruin_isabel@LucasMeijs@muelkaptein.

Our article on the #NGO#halo effect as a cause for NGO #unethical behavior is online. We propose 3 mechanisms for how NGO's unethical behavior can be explained because of the moral goodness of NGOs. #download at https://t.co/B5nmMQKlZG @muelkaptein@LucasMeijs
"The paper.... explores three aspects: accounting for the unintended and unforeseen consequences of NGO activities; impediments and resistance to broader NGO accountability; and striving for enhanced downward accountability." https://t.co/IiOhfqxvTW
Tomorrow "nonprofits and the arts" #ARNOVA21 we will present our research on the "Songs that define the nonprofit sector'. interested in these 200 songs, this is the play list https://t.co/HCLXnYwAXv Interested in the research: come and listen!
@DiarmuidMc@ARNOVA@LucasMeijs@CM__Chapman Thanks for your interest, and nice to know you have conducted research on a similar topic. I will share the paper on Researchgate as a pre-print. I will look for your work as well.
