Key #historyofastronomy sites @CenterForAstro I saw in June. Building C is where @HarlowShapley worked at his famed revolving desk. I saw Building D which he built to safeguard @_GlassStars_ and for new library & workspaces. Below is Shapley at Building D dedication March 1932.
@seanmcarroll Reading is fun! I read your columns in @newscientist all the time! Learning astro to revive the legacy of my witty, prolific grandfather @HarlowShapley. He had big impact!
@_GlassStars_ Director Harlow Shapley raised the funds for this building during the Depression. He had it designed to keep the plates safe from fire and make space for more. Part of the HCO library was moved there. Here is Shapley at the dedication March 23, 1932 (Harwood Collection USN0).
@PalmeriJoAnn JoAnn - This is beautiful! Thank you for sharing! I use your PhD thesis all the time for @HarlowShapley...and @debthink Thank you for that key contribution.
New Tweet: Shapley's Gala Hard Cider from CarlsonOrchards is the legacy of @HarlowShapley and his family on Shapley Land, a nine-acre tract adjoining Oak Ridge Observatory in Harvard, Mass. #conservation#Apples#Astronomy
@DistrictJules Julia I really appreciate your post and agree we need lifesaving care for our veterans - as well as good higher education in the USA. See you!
@HarlowShapley defined the "habitable zone" the conditions where life could arise on #exoplanets From 1953 - late 1960s Shapley spread the idea that "where the conditions for life exist, life will arise." Long before @CarlSaganBot.
Honored to be the speaker at @cosmosclub Geography & Land Use lunch today. Thanks for the chance to share @RestoreMassAve work. I said we're trying to save trees from city projects by @DDOT and @WashGas who keep digging around important trees. What will happen?
Honored to testify to @MaryCheh Jan 7 hearing for a bill to make stronger protections for trees by @DDOT Urban Forestry Division. @CaseyTrees led off the witnesses in favor. Council Member Charles Allen co-sponsored UFPAA 24-222. Let's work to get more Council Members on board!
