There is definitely greed and exploitation running rampant, so I’m not advocating for the perma-paywallers or exploitative practices.

I’m advocating for better conversations around sustainable support for creatives because ‘just donate’ is meaningless when most people never will

That’s not a principled stance against greed. It’s a demand that all creative labour stay unpaid, without support unless it’s tips (which is a lovely concept, but unreliable)

Creative labour is being dismissed altogether in these conversations. Not just greed.

A creator using early access to support their work is not equivalent to someone refusing to work or perma-paywalling.

Yet they’re being treated one and the same and it’s heartbreaking to see.

What’s happening is framing early access and creator support as if it’s people being asked to cover their lifestyle, when it should be about making independent work sustainable.

Creative labour has costs and ‘just donate’ doesn’t cover them, especially when demand is high.

The overhead costs of creation can include Discord Nitro, software subscriptions, website hosting, domains, bot services, hardware upgrades and more.

Even a modest setup can cost hundreds a month and even bigger creator communities can cost ALOT more.

There is nothing wrong with diversifying your income. For many this is how they can reinvest in their craft and even build a new path in life.

In this current economy telling someone to get a real job when people are being laid off left and right and grads have no work? Madness.

Another thing: black cc creators literally improved the Sims 4 experience for black gamers, usually while they juggled real lives, jobs, and even chronic illness. I’ll be damned if I let white simmers tell me they need to be working for free, fuck you!
