On this day in 1959, the Mini was launched in Britain. Designed by Alec Issigonis as an economical answer to the fuel shortages of the 1950s, its clever front-wheel-drive layout created remarkable space inside. Small, affordable and unmistakably British, it became an icon of the Swinging Sixties.

The map of England still carries the memory of woodlands that disappeared centuries ago.

That vanished landscape is still reflected in hundreds of English place names ending in “-ley” and “-leigh”.

These endings come from the Old English "lēah", meaning a clearing, open ground or pasture within woodland.

The original names would have described exactly what was found there:

Ashley - aesc (ash tree) + lēah: a clearing among ash trees.

Oakley - āc (oak) + lēah: an open woodland with oaks.

Shipley - scēap (sheep) + lēah: a clearing or pasture associated with sheep.

Cowley - cū (cow) + lēah: a clearing for cow pasture.

Barnsley - berne (barn) + lēah: a clearing or open place associated with a barn.

These were practical names, rooted in the landscape and everyday life of Anglo-Saxon England.

Over the centuries, the landscapes around these settlements changed. Woods were felled, farmland expanded, and villages grew into towns.

Yet the old names remained.

Today, places ending in “-ley” or “-leigh” can still offer a glimpse of how the landscape looked more than a thousand years ago.

The wild service tree (Sorbus torminalis) is a rare relic of ancient woodland. It bears fruits known as chequers, once sold at markets and given to children as sweets. Said to taste like dates, they were used to flavour beer and may have inspired the name of ‘Chequers Inns’. #FolkloreSunday

Today is Lammas, England's forgotten harvest festival.

Celebrated on 1 August for well over 1,000 years, Lammas was one of the most important days in the English calendar.

First recorded in the 9th century, Lammas takes its name from the Old English hlāf-maesse, meaning "Loaf Mass."

Farmers baked the first loaf from the new wheat harvest and took it to church to be blessed in thanksgiving.

For our ancestors, this wasn't simply a religious ceremony. It was a celebration of survival.

A successful harvest meant bread on the table through the coming winter. A poor harvest could bring hunger and hardship. Few days carried greater importance.

In medieval England, Lammas also marked the end of haymaking, the opening of the grain harvest, and in many places the start of harvest fairs, games and community gatherings.

Although Christmas and Easter remain widely celebrated, Lammas has largely disappeared from everyday life, despite being one of England's oldest seasonal traditions.

In a world where abundance is often taken for granted, Lammas reminds us to be thankful for what we have.
