Am I too woke for saying accusing someone whose first language is not English of using AI bc their syntax may be a little different than native speakers is just racism/xenophobia
May all the white people who spoke against the iskolar & her (HARMLESS!!!) lesbian ships acknowledgement page in her undergraduate thesis get diarrhea forever like holy shit yall are the most miserable, most insufferable bunch fr
I disagree
Truly, not everyone can afford books or access to libraries but the fact that disadvantaged people benefit from piracy doesn’t make it any less wrong or hurtful to the authors
I’ll advocate for knowledge (books) to be more accessible but piracy is still not right!
@_azzym not even cringey, it's the most delightful thing to add your beloved interests onto your acknowledgements and I will not stand for that being vilified 😭 /hj
and to add...buying books is a privilege. having public libraries is a privilege. hell, being able to afford "Kindle Unlimited" is an AMERICAN PRIVILEGE and yet they always use it as an argument.
not everyone is privileged. books are expensive
so much rage for poor readers for daring to have access to books but nothing for the system that's making it impossible for people to buy any book, like the day authors understand that them not getting paid enough is publishing industry's fault not some broke kid from asia
leftists also dont want poor people to be illiterate. the reason why authors donot get money is not because people who cannot afford books are pirating them. its because predatory publishing companies are exploiting them
Piracy would be far less common if the publishing industry hadn't destroyed mass-market paperbacks.
Compare: A paperback my cousin gave me for Hannukkah-mas this past year, vs. a paperback I got back in high school.
I grew up reading from libraries. Which is why the first Harry Potter book was CoS. I couldn’t afford to read the seventh book, because my library didn’t have it even in 2008. Piracy at that point also needed investment in physical books.
the worst part of piracy discourse is when i start seeing things like “reading is a luxury” or “reading isn’t a necessity”. we’re living through a literacy crisis and the fact that this is rhetoric is being parroted keeps pissing me off.
@SoNotFeelingIt@511d07@aipriverses In fact, myself included, the moment I would have better financial means, would start buying books normally. But we should still remember that there are people who cannot.
@SoNotFeelingIt@511d07@aipriverses So many people in my own country are left with no public libraries, or sometimes, even internet. I am not going to judge someone who does not have the means to buy books and read them ethically. I can tell you it's not because they want to steal from the author.
my take on piracy as an aspiring author and an avid reader:
when it comes to indie authors or lesser known authors who rely on every penny they get, if you can afford the books, buy them. if you 🏴☠️ them, promote them in other ways by hyping and talking about them so that +
the whole discussion about book 🏴☠️ is so stupid if you’re not from an english speaking country, you probably won’t find an english book in your local library, especially fictional ones & books aren’t getting any cheaper so MAYBE focus on availability and affordable pricing first
this has gotta be the most disgusting take i’ve seen. women in Afghanistan can’t read, have an education, or even move freely in public places. you really think they can go to a library or go on amazon…? IT IS AGAINST THE LAW. the entitlement is coming from YOU.
these authors need to realize that entering reader spaces js to lecture readers abt piracy rarely achieves anything lol. it’s not going to stop piracy, it’s not going to magically increase your sales, n honestly it might even have the opposite effect !!!
