#VPDNews: The Vancouver Police Department (VPD) is warning seniors in the city to be aware of distraction thieves after 11 incidents in June and July.

“These are criminals who think nothing of targeting elderly victims and stealing their valuable family heirlooms,” said Sgt. Tim Russell, with the VPD’s Robbery/Assault/Arson Unit.

“The victims are just out and about, living their lives when a person, or a group, approaches on foot or in a vehicle, distracts them and using practiced sleight of hand, replaces their jewelry with fakes. It happens quickly, in a matter of seconds, but the impact on the victims is long-lasting. Family heirlooms and their sense of safety is lost.”

Where someone resists, it’s not uncommon for the thieves to simply yank jewelry from them.

As of July 16, 35 distraction thefts have been reported in Vancouver in 2026.

17 in District 3 – Sunset, Renfrew-Collingwood, Mount Pleasant, Killarney, Victoria-Fraserview, and Kensington-Cedar Cottage
9 in District 2 – Strathcona, Grandview-Woodlands, and Hastings-Sunrise
8 in District 4 – Point Grey, Kitsilano, Fairview, Dunbar-Southlands, Arbutus Ridge, Shaughnessy, South Cambie, Riley Park, Musqueam, Kerrisdale, Oakridge, and Marpole
1 in the downtown core

The total value of items stolen in these thefts so far this year is $245,000.

In 2025, 158 distraction thefts were reported with total losses of $364,000.

The thieves involved in these incidents are part of organized crime rings, both of Canadian citizens and foreign nationals. They often criss-cross Canada in rented vehicles.

Police are asking seniors to:

Conceal Valuables: Keep jewelry and other valuables hidden underneath your clothing when out in public or working in your yard.
Protect Your Space: Maintain physical boundaries. Do not let strangers approach you or enter your personal space, even if they seem friendly or are offering gifts.
Draw Attention: If you feel you are being targeted or you feel unsafe, make noise, yell, and attract the attention of bystanders.
Report Immediately: Call 911 right away if you are the victim or witness a distraction theft.
