2001 was the turning point for Eritrea.

May 2001— A group of 15 senior officials, known as the *G-15*, who fought in the liberation struggle, wrote an open letter criticizing Isaias Afwerki for refusing to implement the constitution and for leading the country into the devastating 1998-2000 war. They demanded democratic reform.

Summer 2001 — For the first time, Eritrea had a free private press. Papers like *Tsigenay (ጽጌናይ), Zemen, Keste Debena, Meqaleh, and Setit* did what no one had done before. They interviewed ministers, published the open letters, and openly debated the future of the country. This is the paper shared from August 6, 2001.

September 18, 2001 — Just 36 days after the paper was published, the regime arrested 11 of the G-15, shut down all private newspapers, and detained dozens of journalists, including Dawit Isaak.

Since that week, there have been no private newspapers, no parliament, no elections, and no constitution implemented. That is why September 18 is remembered as Black Tuesday, and this year is 25 years.

That is why the archive of Tsigenay is so important — it is proof of how far Eritrea had come, and what was lost.
