We’re deeply disappointed with NHS Cheshire and Merseyside’s decision to stop gluten free prescribing for adults with coeliac disease, despite 78% opposing this in consultation. Prescribing continues for under-18s until Nov 2025; we urge the ICB to ensure support after that. This will hit the most vulnerable hardest, worsening health inequalities amid the cost of living crisis.

"I felt like I was 60, not 27"
Derek, Coeliac UK's Social Media Officer, shares his story of years feeling unwell with unexplained fatigue and various deficiencies – all before finally being diagnosed with coeliac disease in 2016.
His diagnosis came after personal heartbreak and years of unanswered questions. The gluten free diet didn’t bring instant relief, but when it did, it was life-changing.
“I felt like a new person. My brain felt like it had ignited.”
Now working at Coeliac UK, Derek is passionate about supporting others through their own diagnosis journey – especially younger people who may feel isolated or misunderstood.
This Coeliac Awareness Month, we’re fighting for earlier diagnosis and better support for everyone with coeliac disease.

Have you heard of Dermatitis Herpetiformis (DH)?
DH is a skin condition linked to coeliac disease, affecting around 1 in 3,300 people. Symptoms include red, raised patches with intense itching and stinging, often appearing symmetrically on the elbows, knees, and buttocks.
A gluten free diet is essential for managing DH, just like for coeliac disease, and medication like dapsone may be used to control the rash while the diet takes effect.

At 22.17 (train got in at 22.02) I decided to crawl off. Had to move all my stuff onto the platform. Member of cleaning staff offered to help. They’re not insured.
We're proud to support the Better Bones campaign by the @RoyalOsteoSoc
Over the year, they've tirelessly campaigned for Fracture Liaison Services (FLS) to diagnose osteoporosis early. This means quicker treatment and fewer broken bones.
Since 2022, over 300,000 people have used their five-minute risk checker! This tool has led to over 29,000 early diagnoses.
People with coeliac disease may have low bone mineral density (BMD), which is used to diagnose osteoporosis. Studies have shown that low BMD can affect up to 75% of people when they are diagnosed with coeliac disease at any age. Even people with few symptoms of coeliac disease can have a significantly lower BMD than the general population because of lowered absorption of calcium from the gut.
You can visit the risk checker here -https://t.co/IpEfuWBQ4J
It was great to see @BBCBreakfast covering the cost of gluten free food on @BBCOne this morning! @Coeliac_UK are on a mission to make gluten free food more affordable and accessible & thanks to the BBC for asking me to feature too! 🧡
Having a piece like this on TV is huge and another step forwards in getting the word out there. We just need to keep the conversation going - never give up hope that we can make a difference.
As we reflect on Coeliac Awareness Month, we’re thankful for incredible support from our community! Thank you to everyone who shared their stories, raised their voices, and helped to raise awareness. You’ve made a difference!
Here’s a roundup of our impactful campaign:
#CoeliacStories: Throughout May, we shed light on the various stories of undiagnosed coeliac disease featuring 6 brave individuals who came forward to share their story to help others. We also shared lesser known facts about associated conditions like Down’s syndrome and autoimmune thyroid disease.
𝐈𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐜𝐨𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐚𝐜𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞.𝐨𝐫𝐠.𝐮𝐤: Our goal was simple - to encourage as many people as possible to take our free online self-assessment, or share with people that might be seeking answers for their symptoms. Getting on the road to recovery faster starts with awareness! At least 13k have taken the test so far, and it's available all year, so you can take it at any time
𝐋𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐬𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭: We took our campaign straight to the heart of legislative power. Events in the Welsh Parliament (Senedd) and the Northern Ireland Assembly, along with engagement across all four UK parliaments, amplified our message.
𝐒𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐢𝐧 𝐄𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐖𝐚𝐲: Whether you organised an awareness event, checked for local volunteer led activities, attended our Facebook cook-along with Becky Excell Gluten Free , or simply bought BFree's stone-baked pitta breads (20p per pack sold in May supports Coeliac UK), you’ve amplified our message and helped reach more people.
How will you continue to make a difference? Remember, every action counts!
If you think you might have coeliac disease, visit isitcoeliacdisease to take our self-assessment and check if you should be tested.

Why was this article published? If you have coeliac disease you SHOULD NOT EAT GLUTEN anywhere in the world 🌍
Once diagnosed with coeliac disease you have it for life and the only ‘treatment’ for coeliac disease is to 100% exclude gluten from your diet.

This is great news - thank you to @DrAmirKhanGP, @lorraine & @Coeliac_UK for raising some much needed awareness this Coeliac Awareness Month 🧡
More people need to understand how important it is, that it's not a choice and that cross contamination is a non negotiable - not even a tiny crumb!
Also hopefully some folk who might be watching might realise off the back on hearing about some of the symptoms that they (or someone they know) might need to be tested.
I will be tuning in, will you? #CoeliacAwarenessMonth
Many thanks to @DrAmirKhanGP, @ITV, and @lorraine for bringing attention to coeliac disease on national TV yesterday on #InternationalCoeliacDiseaseDay.
It's incredibly positive to see coeliac disease discussed on such a platform. Let's show our appreciation by sharing feedback with the show and advocating for more coeliac disease and gluten free awareness on television.
Share this post with your friends and family to help raise awareness during #CoeliacAwarenessMonth

I have no issue with cross dressing men but they don’t belong in spaces or sport for women & girls. And it’s utter madness to tell anyone, but especially those girls & women losing out, that they have to lie about reality
