@richardmarcj Roy was close to Donald Dewar. As a Labour staffer I had the privilege of showing him Donald’s collection in the library named in honour of his friend in Holyrood which he was eager to see. An important figure in the Labour Party but also a kind, down to earth man. R.I.P.
@DarranMarshall Says the party leader, accounts co-signatory snd even at one point co-treasurer as well as spouse during the same period who told party, press and public there was nothing to see when questions were being asked. Not remotely credible.
@RichardBakerMP I’m so sorry to hear this Richard. Meta will be greatly missed indeed. Condolences to you and all her family and friends, especially @GeorgeFoulkes with whom she has made such a formidable duo in the Lords for many years on so many important causes.
opposition politicians didn't "peddle" anything, they tried to hold to account an utterly corrupt party whose Chief Exec was stealing from members and taxpayers while being protected by the leadership.
If voters had known this before May 7, Swinney would have lost.
Swinney says to Sarwar: "Mr Sarwar peddled all this for the last 5 years...and the people of Scotland made their verdict on the 7th of May and they returned 58 SNP MSPs to this parliament."
The arrogance of the man. Swinney is First Minister because Murrell's case was delayed.
@Alfaromeo170@paulhutcheon That’s a straw man as I think you well know (see previous post). As for your point about “legal mechanisms working exactly as they should,” the fact that this went on for more than a decade despite reporting and oversight requirements I’m afraid shows this also to be nonsense.
@Alfaromeo170@paulhutcheon With respect you clearly don’t. A committee’s role is not to rerun a police investigation or court proceedings but it can very legitimately investigate how this could happen under the reserved Electoral Commission and law. If it’s bad law as you say, that’s exactly the point.
@Alfaromeo170@paulhutcheon They wouldn’t be looking at the SNP’s internal books, these are supposed to be accurately reported to the (reserved) Electoral Commission under UK law. Criminal matters are by definition of public interest. I hope you didn’t take that attitude when you were a police officer.
@Alfaromeo170@paulhutcheon Not correct, the Committee’s inquiries regularly go beyond the Scotland Office (recent examples include Home Office on immigration, DESNZ on Net Zero and DCMS on broadcasting). Has to be on a reserved area and regulation of party donations in Scotland certainly is.
@Alfaromeo170@paulhutcheon Regulation of party donations through the Political Parties, Elections and Referendums Act and the Electoral Commission (in Scotland) are reserved.
@paulhutcheon If the SNP (with Greens) block an inquiry, the @CommonsScotAffs Committee should carry one out. Far from putting this matter to bed, Murrell’s conviction raises many more questions voters in Scotland deserve answers to.
@markthehibby@hughhenry_12 Once upon a time I was a @WeAreSTV researcher. If an interviewee stating incontrovertible facts was dismissed in the way @paulbsinclair was, I’d expect to arrive at my desk to memos about ITC (pre-OFCOM) seeking an explanation.
There was one exception to the woeful standard. Lid Dem MSP Duncan Dunlop made an excellent maiden speech, which ignored independence and centred on something that actually matters. https://t.co/aUeE5bROS0
