What problem? Ease of mobility of funds. They made money move quicker and as a result, people could carry out their day-to-day seamlessly. Easy money, easy life.

Strange but true:

June 21, 1901, a gang of 3 Frenchmen (alleged to be cattle-rustlers) murdered an Englishman, Captain C.V. Keyes of the West African Frontier Force, in Argungu, Northwest Nigeria (now Kebbi State), while resisting his attempt to arrest them.
