A plate of pelagic larval fishes. Many fishes, who as adults are reef bound, have pelagic larvae that travel currents for various amounts of time before settling as a means of dispersal.

Love this one. This is the pelagic octopus Japatella diaphana, which — in addition to performing rapid color changes when illuminated, is also known for the females having a ring-like green bioluminescent organ around their mouth that only glows when they are ready to mate.
This amazing deep-sea shrimp is Eugonatonotus crassus. It is one of only two species in the only genus of the family. Note the amazing reflectance from the eye (known as eye shine) which suggests they have a reflective layer at the back (tapetum) just like cats do.
The Lovely Hatchetfish (Argyropelecus aculeatus) is known from all major, non-polar oceans of the world from between 100 meters depth down to over 2000 meters depth.
Diel vertical migration is so cool man. Imagine being a little 4cm lanternfish swimming 400m every night and then doing it again in the morning - scaled up, that'd be the same as running 20km twice a day!
Please share: I’m recruiting a postdoc (2-years) to start in my lab Fall 2024. My lab studies Functional Morphology and Macroevolution (mostly of fishes).
