Another bear attack in Pauri. Another reminder of what hill life has become.
Manju Devi of Dhanglagaon village in Pauri Garhwal's Nainidanda block was attacked by a bear in broad daylight today.
It's another ghastly attack, and another horrific reminder of the daily struggle people in the hills are living with. One day it's a leopard, the next it's a bear. Women still go to the forest for grass and firewood. Kids still walk forest paths to school. There's no option to just stay indoors.
Villagers are asking a simple question. How long will people in the pahad have to live at the mercy of god?
The forest department and the government need to act now, with patrolling, quick response teams, fair compensation and a real plan to deal with human wildlife conflict. Because every attack is someone's mother, wife or daughter.
In a democracy, the answer to a question is an investigation, not a knock on the door at 2 am
Democracy doesn't run on votes alone. It runs on the right to ask questions afterwards. Who spent the money, why the road broke in one monsoon, why a hospital still has no doctor, why a complaint went nowhere. Asking these questions isn't disloyalty. It's the job of every citizen, and even more so of journalists.
But lately, a worrying pattern is showing up. Accounts that raise uncomfortable questions get mass-reported. Videos get taken down. Pages get banned. And in some cases, police arrive late at night to pick people up, without showing any warrant, notice or written document.
This isn't how the law is supposed to work. Under the Supreme Court's D.K. Basu guidelines, anyone arrested has the right to know why, an arrest memo must be prepared, and the family must be informed. For offences with punishment of up to seven years, the court has said police should usually issue a notice first rather than arrest straightaway. Freedom of speech under Article 19 has limits, but those limits are decided by law and courts, not by whoever gets offended.
To be clear, an allegation isn't proof. Nobody should be declared guilty just because someone made a claim in a video or a post. But the right response to a serious allegation is a fair, transparent investigation. Not silencing the person who made it.
When the reaction to a question is fear instead of facts, people start wondering what's being hidden.
If this is a sign of what's coming, these are worrying times indeed. A government confident in its work doesn't need to fear questions. It answers them.

Not enough young men left in the village, so the women carried her 13 km
In Bakoda, a border village in Champawat, 38-year-old Basanti Devi was hit by sudden, severe stomach pain on Wednesday. There's no road to the village, so villagers tied a sheet to a pole to make a doli.
But most of the young men have left the village in search of work. So the women stepped in. Janki Devi, Maya Devi and Ganga Devi, along with a few men from the village, carried her 13 km up a steep climb to Manch, where a 108 ambulance took her to the district hospital.
This is Champawat, the Chief Minister's own constituency.
And this isn't the first time. We've seen videos from this very village before, of patients being carried the same way, down the same path. The same doli, the same shoulders, the same climb. Nothing has changed.
If the system and the government aren't embarrassed to see these stories coming from the same village again and again, what more can be said?
