Canva just hit $4B in revenue and directly credited LLM referral traffic.
ChatGPT just stole Netflix's SEO expert.

SEO Stuff is coming off another record month. (See my pinned tweet.)

Here is why all these things are connected:
First let's start with Canva hitting $4B in ARR.
Canva co-founder Cliff Obrecht told TechCrunch that "we really see ChatGPT or any of the LLMs as top-of-the-funnel acquisition platforms.”
He also added while traditional search is a big traffic source for them, traffic through LLM referrals is in double-digit percentages.
This all makes perfect sense.
Canva explicitly said:
They drove early growth through Google.
They deeply understood search intent.
They built content that mapped to that intent.
That matters because most AI retrieval pipelines still look like this:
Layer 1:
Search index (Google, Bing, internal index)
Link graph authority
Domain trust
Entity signals
Historical performance
Layer 2:
Chunking into passages
Vector embeddings
Snippet scoring
Context window assembly
LLM synthesis
If you don’t qualify at Layer 1, you never reach Layer 2.
If you don’t structure content properly at Layer 2, you don’t get quoted.
Canva does well because they qualify at both.
The article also mentions:
26M conversations with Canva inside ChatGPT
Top 10 referred domains from ChatGPT
Double-digit percentage LLM referral traffic
That's all the result of:
Strong brand entity recognition
Clean, extractable landing pages
High link equity
Structured product positioning
Massive search intent coverage
Keep in mind, LLMs are conservative systems and they prefer:
Known entities
Consistent brand descriptions
High-confidence sources
Frequently cited domains
This is retrieval confidence scoring in action.
Now also keep in mind, recent Ahrefs data shows:
Google still sends ~190x more traffic than ChatGPT.
ChatGPT’s CTR is lower.
So why invest in AI visibility?
Well, because LLMs are pre-filter engines.
Users increasingly:
Ask ChatGPT for the shortlist
Then Google the final choice
Then convert
If you’re not cited at step one, you never reach step two.
That’s exactly why Canva is investing in both.
This isn't fully set in stone because the reality is that LLMs are smart and will respond even you don't do this in a lot of cases, but best practices include:
Question-based headings
2–4 sentence declarative answers
TLDR blocks
Clean HTML
Logical section segmentation (120–180 word clusters)
Why?
Because retrieval systems chunk content into embeddings.
Well-structured clusters increase:
Semantic match probability
Snippet selection likelihood
Context window density
Entity clarity includes:
Organization schema
Product schema
Consistent NAP data
Clear category labeling
Defined use cases
Entity confusion can lead to retrieval exclusion.
Authority propagation includes:
High-quality backlinks
Mentions in authoritative contexts
Off-site corroboration
Review platforms
Authority still governs retrieval weighting.
All of this validates SEO Stuff’s architecture.
It was built around retrieval mechanics.
Gold Plan:
https://t.co/yEFyM0Ze7W
10 long-form, comparison-driven pages
Structured question-based formatting
Extractable answer blocks
TLDR positioning
3 DR50+ contextual backlinks
Technical + entity optimization
This satisfies:
Page-level authority
Sub-document extractability
Premium Content Bundle:
https://t.co/4CAnUt07PO
60 long-form semantic cluster articles
Full topical coverage
Internal linking architecture
Freshness cycles
Comparison and buyer-intent dominance
This increases:
Embedding density
Category relevance
Entity reinforcement
Retrieval probability
This is how you move from "a site that ranks” (kind of meaningless unless you're on Page 1) to "a domain that LLMs consistently reuse.”
