This isn’t always the case. Decentralized Sovreign held identity held locally off chain and off cloud can accomplish the benefits of digital ID, without compromising and giving into mass surveillance.

There was a time where physical identity was seen as the end of the world in the early 20th century, but has been vital to fighting fraud and forgery. Digital ID can do the same if done correctly. Off-cloud, on prem living on your device for you only. Accessed cryptographically with only a name and DOB when called upon with your permission. No biometrics exchanged.

People are entitled to levels of privacy. There is better solutions to prevent spam calls or criminal activity then collecting biometric data
