A proper mothy night last night here in Market Deeping, South Lincs. 195/56 despite clear skies and near-full moon. My first ever Bordered Straw, Concolorous and Ethmia quadrillella!
Morning Ben, any ideas on this Tort? Black-fronted Straw perhaps? Also I’ve been looking at this dagger too long and it has a darker ground colour than I’m used to… presumably still dark/grey? @FlyinginFordham
Pinion-spotted Pug from the trap last night. One of only 6 moths total. A complete surprise and I think one of only a dozen Lincolnshire records. #ukmoths#moths#britishmoths
Today was the first time I was able to make it out of the house to Maxey Pits for the lingering Lesser Yellowlegs found by Hugh Wright. Spent a good while at 10ft distance drinking in scope views. What a bird! @RareBirdAlertUK@BirdGuides
Ferrugana form of Agapeta zoegana was new for me a couple of nights ago. I only usually get one zoegana per year so to get this form felt extra special. Also an indet. Parornix the first of that family I’ve had.
3 NFG last night in Market Deeping, South Lincs. Including just the 4th record of Jersey Tiger in Lincolnshire. Was also surprised to see Frosted Orange so early!
@MOTHIDUK@FlyinginFordham Evening gents - any possibility of an ID on this one, my mum trapped in North Norfolk but it was rescued from a pool of water, I fear it may be too far gone! It’s roughly the size of a Turnip (moth! 😉).
Haven’t trapped much this year, twice this past week and managed some nice new ones for the garden including a pair of Scarlet Tiger, Four-dotted Footman and Phtheochroa rugosana (Rugged Bryony Beauty). #ukmoths#mothsmatter
@BranstonUK do you know how depressing it is to be excited to eat the best beans in the world only for the ring pull to snap off - a traditional tin opener wouldn’t finish the job and now I’m devastated. Where do we go from here? #moderndaytragedy
Nothing much to report from the trap this morning, Large Thorn NFG and an unusually dark Yellow Shell - never seen one like this before! #ukmoths#mothsmatter#muchadoaboutmothing
A family holiday away around Barcelona, no bins and no moth trap but still managed some great wildlife highlights including: Two-tailed Pasha, Noble False-widow, Alpine Swift, Monk Parakeet, Rush Veneer and the unexpected Paysandisia archon, an exotic inventive from Uruguay!
@FlyinginFordham@MOTHIDUK Yeah, always a couple over the trap unfortunately, usually a collage of wings on the ground sheet for me to ID! At least they’re eating well I suppose…
206/66 here last night. No contest for star of the show… White-spotted Pinion, the first in Lincs since 2019. Accompanied by a NFG cast of:
Lesser-spotted Pinion
Calamotropha paludella
Catoptria falsella
Clavigesta purdeyi
#ukmoths#mothsmatter
@MOTHIDUK@FlyinginFordham Never had a Cosmia and then two show up at once! Is the first lesser spotted? The second I’m pretty confident is white-spotted, does that make the former the same, just worn?
