I find the way Boots Riley responded to Night Jar’s tweets raising Megan Ellison’s problematic production credit considering her familial ties to Israel & their full court press to monopolize media (social & otherwise) to push hasbara really curious. He could have received the critique and probably smoothed over it all by acknowledging it’s less than ideal to do biz with genocidaires in 2026 but pointed out the dearth of other indie studio options and the Zio•nism endemic to Hollywood. I think if he’d simply been like, “It’s totally fair for you to raise the issue of her involvement and I wish I didn’t have an Ellison as a producer, but I personally think it’s a net positive to repurpose millions from such people to make communist or anticapitalist cinema with wide releases, but it’s fine if you disagree”, most of the people I’ve seen speaking to it online probably wouldn’t have been nearly as up in arms as they’ve become. So I find the decision to instead hide behind this bad faith response that it is a “RW talking point” to interrogate the I Love Boosters film’s financial ties and to then start QTing anyone that critiques him along those lines kinda inscrutable, as it seems like he’s being overly defensive because he’s concerned that these attacks are going to affect how the film performs in the box office but then the way he’s handling the fracas is basically inviting more of it. It probably wouldn’t have snowballed into half the viral social media imbroglio it’s become had he just ignored the tweet even.

I’m glad that Boots Riley has carved out a space in Hollywood for himself and I wish there were more explicitly communist filmmakers like him active, but I think it’s completely valid to critique the film or to boycott it because Megan Ellison will be making money off of it.
