TO THOSE THAT QUIT TRADING

A few weeks ago I found out that one of my favorite trainees ever quit after 5 years in the trenches. Hard-working, grateful, fun to be around. Just a great dude. We chatted on the phone for a while and I relayed a few points to him that I wanted to share as I know many have struggled the last few years and are considering quitting.

This is what I say to the dozens I’ve had to fire or that I’ve seen walk away:

1. TRADING IS REALLY FUCKEN HARD! It NEVER gets easy. Not for ANYONE, no matter how skilled or good you get. There will always be bad rips, drawdowns, FOMO, and an assortment of psychological lows. You can’t ever become apathetic and are always one trade away from being back in the dirt. Even at my peak, this was all still true.

2. YOU NEED A REALLY POWERFUL WHY. I’ve seen so many trainees fail out bc trading looked cool and they figured why not. But to have staying power in this game your WHY needs to be stronger than all the WHY NOTS you will be beaten down with during the journey to success.

Some people LOVE trading. Some LOVE the challenge. Some LOVE the freedom or the money or the scoreboard. Or any mix of the above.

But I like to think of it like a boxer. When you get hit in the face and knocked down, you don’t want to get up again. Only a strong WHY can push you to override that and get up again to take another beating. Nobody can give you that WHY, that WHY only comes from within. And if you don’t have it, boy are there easier ways to make a living.

3. WHO YOU ARE IS NOT DEFINED BY YOUR LEVEL OF SUCCESS IN THE MARKETS! DO NOT LET YOUR IDENTITY BE DEFINED BY THAT!

Some of the biggest fucken pricks, assholes, and greedy pigs I know have succeeded at this job. That’s bc the market does not care about who you are. There is no karmic balance or sense of fairness in this game. An emotionless market deals out one’s fate.

If you quit or fail, that doesn’t mean you aren’t smart. Or resilient. Or driven. Or destined to dominate a different field. That doesn’t mean anything less of you as a person. Trust me, of the greatest people I have the pleasure of knowing, not a single one is a trader.

4. One of my favorite parables ever is that of the Chinese farmer (https://t.co/3mUaPdgShb ). However, I’d like to take the interpretation one step further. It isn’t just a matter of an event being good or bad in the proper context. YOU get to make YOUR OWN interpretation and choose YOUR OWN meaning. There is nothing stopping you from interpreting all events as being good ones leading you one step closer to your true calling. All events bring you right to where you belong. That is how I view life. “You are exactly where you are supposed to be.”

I’ve seen so many start their dream job training under me. They dream of success. They’ve never failed before. I’ve had to be the one that breaks their hearts. While crushing at the time, it has ALWAYS worked out for them in the end.

I laugh at how heartbroken I was when I didn’t get into the right college or the full-time offer in energy trading or when the top firms didn’t want me. Those failures were the greatest things to ever happen to me bc they brought me here to this moment.

If you quit trading, I don’t wish you luck in your journey. There is no such thing plus you don’t need it.
