Surprised it took Raj and Uddhav Thackeray this long to join forces after the 2024 Maharashtra Assembly verdict. That outcome gave them no real option.

With the BJP-led alliance securing a massive 235 seats, the Thackeray cousins could clearly see the end of the road. Now, with the BMC also slipping from their grip, they know that losing Mumbai would mean the final blow to their political relevance.

This alliance isn’t driven by conviction — it’s driven by desperation. It’s a last-ditch attempt to hold on to what remains of their influence. Language politics is just a convenient tool in that fight.

On this day, 23 years ago, PM Modi first took oath of office as CM of Gujarat. What is extraordinary is that even while operating at the state or even sub-state level, Modi conceived programs that later were equally relevant at national level. #23YearsOfSeva

Here is a list of 23 such programs, that were first conceived and successfully implemented in Gujarat between 2001-14 and then have been replicated with multiple times the success and impact at national scale post 2014.

1.Sanitation: Nirmal Gujarat to Swachh Bharat Mission
•Gujarat: Modi’s drive to improve sanitation also began in Gujarat, with the Nirmal Gujarat initiative

•Nationally : This approach laid the foundation for the nationwide Swachh Bharat Mission, launched in 2014.

2.Jal Mandir and Amrit Sarovar Initiatives
•Gujarat : Jal Mandir initiative, in Gujarat led to restoration of approximately 1,200 traditional water bodies,
•Nationally : Mission Amrit Sarovar was launched on 24th April, 2022, with mission period till 15th August, 2023.

3. Infrastructure
•Gujarat: BISAG played a key role in Gujarat’s infrastructure development using geospatial technology and remote sensing for planning, resource management, and disaster preparedness.

•Nationally: This approach was expanded under the Gati Shakti National Master Plan, integrating 16 ministries using GIS technology for national infrastructure development. Gati Shakti mirrors BISAG’s success.

4.Jyotigram Yojana to Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana (DDUGJY)
•Gujarat Level: The Jyotigram Yojana was a revolutionary rural electrification scheme that ensured 24x7 power supply to villages in Gujarat.

•National Level: The success of this scheme led to the launch of the Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana in 2015.

5.Kanya Kelavani Yojana to Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao
•Gujarat Level: Gujarat's Kanya Kelavani Yojana promoted girl child education and addressed gender disparity in education.

•National Level: This initiative evolved into the nationwide Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao scheme, focusing on preventing female foeticide, ensuring survival, protection, and education of the girl child.

6. Chiranjeevi Yojana to PM Matru Vandana Yojana
•Gujarat Level: Gujarat’s Chiranjeevi Yojana was an innovative health scheme providing free medical care to mothers and infants from BPL families.

•National Level: This healthcare model was expanded under PM Matrutva Vandana Yojana, to improve health seeking behavioral amongst the Pregnant Women & Lactating Mothers (PW&LM).

7. Vibrant Gujarat Summit to Make in India
•Gujarat Level: The Vibrant Gujarat Summit was a biennial investor summit launched to attract global investment to Gujarat.

•National Level: Taking a cue from its success, Modi launched the Make in India initiative at the national level to promote India as a global manufacturing hub, inviting both domestic and foreign investments.

8.Sabarmati Cleaning to Namami Gange
•Gujarat Level: Sabarmati river in Ahmedabad was an integral part of the City . When Narendra Modi became the Chief Minister, he ensured that river was revived and a river front was made in the city of Ahmedabad.

•National Level: This model was replicated in the form of Namami Gange, an ambitious project for the cleaning and conservation of the Ganga River, focusing on ecological rejuvenation and sustainable practices.

9. Krishi Mahotsav to Beez se Bazaar Tak

•Gujarat Level: Krushi Mahotsav was first started in the year-2005-06 to bring modern implements, agricultural methods, water harvesting and electricity harvesting programs to the farmers at the village level through public participation in the agricultural sector in the state.

•National Level: On a larger scale, this initiative inspired the launch of many schemes like Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi, Beej Se Bazar, Agricultural Infrastructure Fund, Per Drop More Crop and other schemes of agriculture.

10. Khel Mahakumbh
•Gujarat : Khel Mahakumbh was started in 2010. This annual event has played a key role in developing a sports culture and ecosystem in Gujarat.

•Nationally: The same was replicated at national level in form of Khelo India, TOPS etc.

11.Sujalam Sufalam Yojana to Krishi Sinchai Yojana
•Gujarat Level: The Sujalam Sufalam Yojana aimed at conserving water resources and rejuvenating water bodies across Gujarat.

•National Level: Jal Shakti Abhiyan (2019) & Atal Bhujal Yojana. The goal of Atal Bhujal Yojana (Atal Jal) is to demonstrate community-led sustainable ground water management which can be taken to scale.

12.Mission Karm Yogi – From Gujarat to India
•Gujarat Level: In 2004, Mission Karam Yogi training course was designed and launched. The aim was to bring about a "qualitative change, fundamentally reform and improve work culture of the officials."

•Nationally : “Mission Karmayogi” was launched in 2020 with the objective of enhancing governance through Civil Service Capacity Building.

13.Mass scaling of Solar Energy
•Gujarat: Launched in 2010, the strategy has made significant progress with rent-a-roof project, residents give their rooftops on hire to private solar energy companies who in turn pay them ` 3 for every unit of energy produced. The solar panels covering canals also became very popular.

•Nationally : On 29th February, 2024 PM Surya Ghar Bijli Yojan was launched.

14.Climate Mission
•Gujarat: Gujarat Climate Change Department (2009) was established as India's first dedicated climate change department. It developed the Gujarat State Action Plan on Climate Change. Under CM Modi, climate-resilient agricultural practices were adopted.

•Nationally: Comprehensive national strategy to combat climate change is Introduced with new missions on wind energy, health, and coastal areas. Ambitious targets were set for reducing carbon intensity and increasing forest cover. India has successfully reduced the emission intensity vis-à-vis its GDP by 33% between 2005 and 2019, thus achieving the initial NDC target for 2030, 11 years ahead of the scheduled time.

15.Soil Health Card
•Gujarat : Gujarat is a first state which issues Soil Health Card scheme for every land holdings to farmers. Gujarat farmers who used to grow 1-2 crops now grow 3-4 with increase in profit.

•Nationally: “Soil Health Card” Scheme has been under implementation in the country since February, 2015

16.Responding to Crisis- Helping All Leaving None
•Gujarat :2013- Uttarakhand Floods: During the Flood of Uttarakhand, the Government of Gujarat under the CM Modi was able to save as many people as possible from Gujarat as well as helped people from other states too.

•Nationally: All disaster across world or rescue missions, India has been the first responder. In Operation Ganga, not only India managed to rescue all its students, India helped students from other countries as well.

17.Gujarat Skill Development Mission (2009) - Skill India Mission
•Gujarat: Gujarat Skill Development Mission (GSDM) was established in February, 2009 for coordinating the State level strategy and programs for skill development

•Nationally: The National Skill Development Mission (NSDM) was launched on July 15, 2015.

18.Interacting with Students to Pariksha Pe Charcha
•Gujarat: The then Chief Minister of Gujarat , Narendra Modi would often interact with the students and with teachers across the state. He would motivate students and teachers to work hard. In 2012 , he interacted with nearly 1 crore students and teacher.

•Nationally: Now PM Modi speak to students , teachers and even parents through Pariksha Pe Charcha.

19.E-Governance - Digital India
•Gujarat: e-Gram Vishwagram Project (2003). It Connected villages through broadband for improved governance. It Provided e-services to rural areas, enhancing transparency and efficiency. Became a model for rural e-governance initiatives

•Nationally: Digital India was launched in 2015. Under Digital India Programme, Ministry of Panchayati Raj is implementing e-Panchayat Mission Mode Project. Of course, Digital India has evolved into a mega success with may schemes under its umbrella.

20.Mukhyamantri Gruh Yojna to PM Awas
•Gujarat : Mukhya Mantri GRUH Yojana (MMGY) was announced on 18 July 2013 to make urban areas ‘Slum Free’ and providing housing at affordable prices.

•Nationally: In May 2014, it was the vision of Prime Minister to build and provide pucca houses to change the living conditions of poor people in both rural and urban areas. This culminated in the launch of Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Urban (2015) and Gramin (2016).

21.Swajal Dhara to Har Ghar Jaal
•Gujarat : The Swajal Dhara scheme, introduced during tenure as Chief Minister of Gujarat, focused on ensuring community participation in managing rural water supply systems, emphasizing the importance of clean and accessible drinking water for all.

•Nationally: Har Ghar Jal aims to provide piped water supply to every household in rural India by 2024, ensuring sustainable water management and improving the quality of life.

22.From Mukhya Mantri Amrutam Yojana (2012) to Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY)
•Gujarat : ‘Mukhyamantri Amrutam (MA)’ scheme started in 2012 to shield poor citizens from the catastrophic costs of medical treatment and illness.

•Nationally : Prime Minister launched the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) in 2018 - the largest health insurance scheme in the world providing coverage of up to Rs. 5 lakh per family per year

23.SWAGAT to PRAGATI
•Gujarat: SWAGAT was started by PM in 2003, as the then CM of Gujarat, Narendra Modi. It was a first of its kind tech-based grievance redressal programme in the country.

•Nationally: This approach was later expanded nationally with the launch of PRAGATI (Pro-Active Governance and Timely Implementation). PRAGATI is a multi-purpose, multi-modal platform that allows the Prime Minister to interact directly with central and state government officials to review the progress of critical infrastructure and public welfare projects, as well as address public grievances .
