My teenage daughter’s soccer coach called and said there had been complaints from parents about her “charging students money” in the locker room before practice.
Fantastic.
I assumed she was selling energy drinks or makeup or some ridiculous social media trend product.
When I got there, the coach handed me a shoebox full of crumpled dollar bills and said, “Before you get upset, you should probably hear the whole story.”
Turns out my daughter had realized several girls on the team were pretending to forget equipment because they couldn’t afford replacement gear. Cleats were falling apart. Shin guards were cracked. One girl had been wearing shoes two sizes too small all season.
So my daughter started a secret exchange system.
Players who outgrew gear could “sell” it to her for a dollar so nobody felt pitied. Then she’d quietly pass the equipment to teammates who needed it most, also for a dollar, because she said accepting charity made people uncomfortable.
Every single dollar went back into buying used sports gear online...
